Makurdi-Port Harcourt Rail Line Opens For Commuters

A rail line connecting Makurdi in Nigeria’s central region to Port Harcourt in the south has become operational, adding to the number of rail lines that the Nigerian government has resuscitated in the last few years. Commissioning the Makurdi- Port Harcourt rail line in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State on Monday, Vice President Namadi Sambo said the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration had vowed to continue with the transformation agenda in the area of rail transport system until all Nigerians have access to train services. Mr Sambo said that the Federal Government would ensure the completion of another line, the Port Harcourt through Enugu-Makurdi to Kaduna line, before the end of President Jonathan’s administration. The Vice President also declared that all rail network from the eastern rail line, through Makurdi to Kaduna and linking Kano to Lagos western line would all be connected. For the host governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam, it was a dream come true, as he had the opportunity to ride on the train for the first time. He said that President Jonathan’s administration had restored the rail system for Nigerians. The Nigerian Railway Corporation gave further assurances that the train would keep running twice a week along the route, noting that the failed cooling system in one of the five coaches will be rectified. After cutting the tape, the Vice President, in company of the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, including former chairman, Bamanga Turkur, Senators’ Ahmadu Ali, Idris Umar and the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, took a test drive to the administrative office of the Corporation in Makurdi. The newly introduced five coaches train of 68 seater imported from China, according to the managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, is part of the completion process of the Makurdi-Port Harcourt eastern line that will link several communities. http://www.channelstv.com/2015/01/23/makurdi-port-harcourt-rail-line-opens-for-commuters/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Emir Sanusi To Electorate: Don’t Vote For Persecutors - Politics

THE Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has urged voters to make a credible choice in next month’s elections by not allowing their votes to fall into the hands of those he described as persecutors. According to the monarch, making a bad choice will be a recipe for disaster. Sanusi spoke when the state Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) governorship candidate, Bashir Ishaq, visited him in his palace yesterday. The emir said leadership required commitment and sacrifice, stressing that one was at liberty to vote for a candidate of one’s choice. But, he advised: “You should make sure that you do not allow your votes to fall into the hands of persecutors; you should not concede your votes to those you know would oppress you.” The Kano Emirate Council, he said, is a non-partisan traditional institution that is never known to be dancing to the whims and caprices of any political party. The monarch, who spoke at length on the need to avoid violence in the name of politics, also advised politicians to accommodate one another’s views without prejudice. The PDM governorship candidate said he was concerned about the abysmal decline of education at primary and secondary levels, adding that with his foray into the race, he was determined to deal with the rot. He stated that he was also willing to establish an independent power station in the state in the face of the nation’s appalling economy, stressing that with adequate power supply, the state’s economy would remarkably improve. Ishaq said the sector would also receive his priority attention because of expectations placed on the government for a robust healthcare system. He added that he was willing to come up with a unique concept of governance for the state source : http://thenationonlineng.net/new/kano-emir-electorate-dont-vote-persecutors-2/

AIT's Online Poll Hacking Evidence Was Faked - Gbenga Sesan - Politics

EXPOSED: AIT Caught Pants Down After Accusing Buhari Supporters of Hacking Its Online Poll The Africa Independent Television (AIT), has been caught pants down in an attempt to smear the image of the presidential candidate f the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, which has become a stock in trade for many individuals, groups and organisations sympathetic to the cause of President Goodluck Jonathan. The Television station had few days ago organised an online poll between the Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Goodluck Jonathan and that of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari on who Nigerians prefer as their president. But just a day after the poll went online, AIT being the organiser pull down the poll after Buhari assumed an unprecedented lead over president Jonathan, claiming the site is undergoing maintenance. Buhari’s lead in notwithstanding a documentary which has been aired constantly on the television platform with the clear intent of tarnishing the image of the former Head of State. The decision of the TV station to pull down the poll did not go down well with most Nigerians who criticised AIT for its bias on Buhari. Scores of people lambasted the station for deliberately playing out the script of the presidency and the PDP. But in order to justify her decision to pull down the poll website where Buhari was clearly in the lead, AIT released a press statement claiming the poll was hacked by supporters of Buhari with the use of a software to vote several times in favour of Buhari. In the statement widely circulated to media houses, AIT claimed an integrity test conducted on the result of the poll showed that 30 unidentified unique IP addresses voted a total of 4969 in favour of Buhari, suggesting that the process was hacked and rigged. Not satisfied with the claim by AIT however, ICT expert and Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative Nigeria (PIN), Gbenga Sesan went to work and discovered that AIT did nit only lied in the press statement, but also deliberately manioulated the CSV file which contained the IP addresses where voters who participated in the polling are found. According to Mr. Sesan, though the AIT tried to edit the CSV file so as to prove their point that the poll was hacked, they failed in putting the numbers together which ended up exposing them. Incidentally, this is about the second time a similar but deliberate falsification from the Jonathan camp would be exposed. In early 2014, a presidential aide sent a mail with an alias attempting to indict former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who is now the emir of Kano as the sponsor of Boko Haram. Sanusi at that time exposed the $20 billion said to be missing from the account of the Nigerian Nationa Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). See below Mr. Sesan’s finding as he revealed via his twitter handle. @gbengasesan 'Gbénga Sèsan @gbengasesan · 2h 2 hours ago 1. IBB – All Presidential Candidates Have My Blessing - Politics

Former military president, Gen Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has cleared the air on his preferred candidate in the forth-coming presidential election saying that he endorses all the candidates. Babangida made this known yesterday in a CHANNELS Television talk show programme, Straight Talk where he said all the candidates have shown passion for the unity of the country. Asked by the programme presenter, Kadaria Ahmed if he actually endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as was reported in the media, Babangida said he actually alluded to it. “I did allude to that, I said I found him as someone who has a very strong belief about the unity of this country. “Those of us who fought the civil war, I still carry a bullet here as a permanent reminder in me, anything that talks about Nigeria’s unity, I get impassioned about it. So what I said is that the president believes in the unity of this country and any other person who believes in the unity of this country should support the president to keep the country one. “Well, as far as 2015 is concerned all the presidential candidates, 14 of them have my blessing. The only difference, I did mention it, is that, I have not been able to read what they have to offer to this country and I am going to do that. Whoever offers what I was looking forward to I will cast my vote,” IBB said http://leadership.ng/news/407167/presidential-candidates-blessing-ibb http://monitor9ja.com/2015/01/ibb-presidential-candidates-blessing/

Islamic extremist attack in Nigeria named the ‘deadliest massacre’ in history

HUNDREDS of bodies — too many to count — remain strewn in the bush in Nigeria from an Islamic extremist attack that Amnesty International suggested Friday is the “deadliest massacre” in the history of Boko Haram. Mike Omeri, the government spokesman on the insurgency, said fighting continued Friday for Baga, a town on the border with Chad where insurgents seized a key military base on January 3 and attacked again on Wednesday. “Security forces have responded rapidly, and have deployed significant military assets and conducted air strikes against militant targets,” Omeri said in a statement. District head Baba Abba Hassan said most victims are children, women and elderly people who could not run fast enough when insurgents drove into Baga, firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles on town residents. (AP Photo / Haruna Umar file ) Source: AP “The human carnage perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists in Baga was enormous,” Muhammad Abba Gava, a spokesman for poorly armed civilians in a defence group that fights Boko Haram, told The Associated Press. He said the civilian fighters gave up on trying to count all the bodies. “No one could attend to the corpses and even the seriously injured ones who may have died by now,” Gava said. An Amnesty International statement said there are reports the town was razed and as many as 2,000 people killed. If true, “this marks a disturbing and bloody escalation of Boko Haram’s ongoing onslaught,” said Daniel Eyre, Nigeria researcher for Amnesty International. In Washington, U.S. State Department Spokesman Jen Psaki condemned the attacks. “We urge Nigeria and its neighbours to take all possible steps to address the urgent threat of Boko Haram. Even in the face of these horrifying attacks, terrorist organisations like Boko Haram must not distract Nigeria from carrying out credible and peaceful elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian people,” Psaki said in a statement. Source: AP The previous bloodiest day in the uprising involved soldiers gunning down unarmed detainees freed in a March 14, 2014, attack on Giwa military barracks in Maiduguri city. Amnesty said then that satellite imagery indicated more than 600 people were killed that day. The 5-year insurgency killed more than 10,000 people last year alone, according to the Washington-based Council on Foreign Relations. More than a million people are displaced inside Nigeria and hundreds of thousands have fled across its borders into Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria. Emergency workers said this week they are having a hard time coping with scores of children separated from their parents in the chaos of Boko Haram’s increasingly frequent and deadly attacks. He said he was optimistic that more reunions will come as residents return to towns that the military has retaken from extremists in recent weeks. Suleiman Dauda, 12, said he ran into the bushes with neighbours when extremists attacked his village, Askira Uba, near Yola last year. “I saw them kill my father, they slaughtered him like a ram. And up until now I don’t know where my mother is,” he told The Associated Press at Daware refugee camp in Yola.

Power Blocs Backing Buhari –Tunde Bakare

The Serving Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said a majority of those that constitute the power blocs in the country are in support of All Progressives Congress pres‎idential candidate, Muhammad Buhari. He said this while speaking on the theme, ‘Nigeria beyond 2015′, at a public lecture organised by Angola Hall of Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State, on Wednesday. According to him, power blocs in any country influence and determine winners during elections. The Nigerian power blocs, he said, were peoples vote, council of state, clerics, governors, traditional rulers, top entrepreneurs and retired generals. The cleric said, “Peoples vote determines electoral victory anywhere in the world, the entrenched power blocs determine electoral victory more than anything. There are six or seven political blocs entrenched in Nigeria. The incumbent president and former head of states – council of state. From the council of states, we have two candidates – one former head of state and one incumbent president. There are six others that I want you to consider on whose side they are. “Traditional rulers, retired generals, who have tasted power, who can you say clearly is the person they are supporting? The governors and let us consider the corporate boys, who are the men of commerce. Where is Aliko Dangote, Otedola,Tony Elumelu and others? “Look at those who control the large constituents of people on Sunday. Tell me who is Pastor Adeboye, Oyedepo, Oritsejafor backing? Those who influence voting are doing so behind the scene and when the results come, we say ‘they have cheated us’. “Don’t be deceived by what they say in the paper, a lot happens behind the scene. I agree with you, I have said earlier that my loyalty lies with Buhari and maybe because I am an insider, I know better than you.” If Buhari emerges victorious, the pastor noted that 100 days would be too much to hand over power to the APC candidate. He said, “If we don’t run it (Nigeria) properly, we will be running into a major storm that can consume us. The February 2015 election further provides the incubator for the hatching of the dreaded scenarios. “Nigeria has a way of throwing up anti-climax. If Buhari wins, what will happen between March and May. It is too long a time.” http://www.punchng.com/news/power-blocs-backing-buhari-bakare/

Buhari Refusal To Participate In Debate Shocks Supporters - Politics

The refusal by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to participate in the proposed presidential debate organised by the Nigeria Electoral Debate Group (NEDG), has been described as not only an act of cowardice to his supporters across the country but an indication of his shallow mindedness about the ideals of statecraft. According to Comrade Oluwasanmi Solomon of the Arise Africa Youth Coalition, Buhari’s non participation in the debate showed that he was scared to expose his ineptitude and a huge disappointment to his teeming supporters which will lower their morale particularly on the numerous controversies surrounding his academic qualification. He said, it was only proper that the former Head of State gave the electorates an opportunity to dig into his intellectual capacity which is more important than the face saving public relations being carried out by his image laundering team. He alleged that it was rather unfortunate that the APC Presidential candidate who has been accused of not possessing the required academic qualification to contest the elections will shy away from the only opportunity to prove his detractors wrong. Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, Comr. Oluwasanmi who stated that the people were the most important ingredient in a democracy, advised Buhari to go back to his handlers to understudy the tenets of democracy. “Democracy the world over is anchored on openness and accountability, which is totally different from military government, as such an aspiring leader who cannot confront the masses to outline his blueprint on developing the nation’s economy; respond to questions that will better the lot of the people cannot not be given the mandate to preside over the commonwealth of the nation.” “It is rather unfortunate that the General is yet to understand how democracy works. This system is about the people, and the peoples’ decision should be paramount. The people have asked for a debate, Buhari should oblige them to show how people-oriented he will be as president”. He said. The civil rights activist further berated the APC for supporting their candidate in his refusal to participate in the debate. He noted that the change longed for, was one that will carry the people along and not a change that will be anchored on a cabal or person. While challenging the party, Oluwasanmi called on the APC to prove their popular claim of being a body of intellectuals by coming out to face Jonathan during the debate, saying the debate will not only put paid to Buhari’s certificate saga but also expose his intellectual capability. http://leadership.ng/news/407341/buhari-refusal-participate-debate-shocks-supporters I did warn egift when he was embarking on his failed propaganda that except the debate was held using Hausa language we won't see Buhari, vindicated again. The 2011 debate was a circus, this is the real deal.
