We are already celebrating PDP’s victory – Patience Jonathan

Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience Jonathan, has said the Peoples Democratic Party women’s campaign rally was in Ogun State on Tuesday to celebrate the party’s victory and not to hold a campaign rally.
She said this in Abeokuta on Monday at the PDP secretariat, when she met the women’s wing of the party in the state.
Dame Jonathan, who was represented by the wife of the vice-president, Mrs Aminat Namadi Sambo, said it was time for the PDP to take over the state from the ruling All Progressives Congress, while his husband and the vice-president, should be re-elected to continue their transformation agenda.
She said, “What we are seeing today, to me, is only a celebration. We are not here to campaign; the party has started. We are just here to thank our women.
“The rousing welcome and the reception you have accorded us are indications that PDP is coming back to Ogun State. If there is a place that we need change, it is Ogun State, but we need transformation in Abuja. So, my dear women, I urge you to come out en masse on March 28 and vote for Mr. President.
“We are all aware of the good works they have started and I think it is advisable that we allow them to continue what they have started.”
The wife of the president, who noted that her husband’s administration had been a gender-friendly one, expressed the hope that the president would continue to support Nigerian women to attain not only the 35 per cent affirmative action but also to take it up to 50 per cent.
For PDP to return to power in Ogun State, she said it would not happen through a magic wand, appealing to collect their Permanent Voter Cards, and turn out en masse on March 28 and April 11 and vote for the party.
She said, “PDP will come back to Ogun State. But we need to do more. We need to go and get our PVC. Anybody that hasn’t collected his or her card should please do so.
“That is your power, that is your right and bring back the mandate that we have been expecting from you as women.”
She said President Jonathan had brought transformation to various sectors  – roads, power, airports, railway and education among others.
She said, “I am quite sure you have tasted and you have been a witness to the good works that he has done in this great state of yours.
“I’m quite sure you are aware‎ of the new power plant that has been constructed. I am quite sure you are aware of the transformation that has been going on in our transport system, the roads are now motorable. Work is ongoing in Lagos-Benin Road. So, we want you to continue to enjoy the goodies.
“Our railways are now working, our schools have been impacted with great infrastructure and our universities have been having a new uplift. I want to assure you that they will continue to support education, they will continue to transform the health sector, they will continue to transform the educational sector.
“Our airports are now having facelift everywhere you go. I’m quite sure, with your mandate, they will continue to do more.”
The PDP governorship candidate for the state, Gboyega Isiaka, and the former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, also canvassed votes for the President’s re-election.
Daniel noted that while Jonathan “is energetic and youthful, Buhari (Mohammadu Buhari) is old and weak.”

Buhari meets media owners, pledges to uphold freedoms

Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd)
The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has assured the media that his administration will uphold their constitutionally guaranteed freedoms if elected.
Buhari gave the assurance at an interactive forum with media owners including members of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria as well as owners of broadcast stations, at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja, on Tuesday.
The APC candidate explained that his actions during his tenure as military Head-of-State should not be used to judge him today.
According to him, he has no power to change the past but that he can substantially change the present and have a positive impact on the future.
Buhari said, “I want to give you my full assurances that in this democratic dispensation, I will ensure that the Nigerian Constitution is upheld. This includes respect for the Media, respect for the right to free expression and freedom of speech.
“Many of you are aware of decree number 4 of 1984 which was heavily criticised. I have said elsewhere, I cannot change the past; but I can change the present and the future.

Nigeria, others behind OPEC lowest output since June

Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke
The decline in crude oil production in Nigeria, Iraq and Libya drove down output from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries to its lowest in February since June last year, according to the cartel’s latest monthly report released on Monday.
According to secondary sources cited in the report, total OPEC crude oil production averaged 30.02 million barrels per day in February, a decrease of 140,000 bpd from the previous month. In December, the group’s production was 30.25 million bpd.
In July last year, OPEC output was put at 30.117 million bpd, up from 29.786 million bpd in June.
“Crude oil output decreased mostly from Iraq, Nigeria and Libya, while production showed increases in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait,” the 12-member oil cartel said.
Nigeria’s oil output dropped to 1.896 million bpd in February from 1.96 million bpd in January, according to secondary sources cited in the report.

ICC to probe Patience Jonathan

The International Criminal Court on Monday said Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, is liable to prosecution.
The global criminal court added that it had begun conducting preliminary examinations relating to the situations in Nigeria.
In an email to our correspondent, the Office of the Prosecutor stated that it received the petition written by the major opposition party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress, asking the ICC to prosecute President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife for making inciting comments that might lead to violence.
The email read, “Under Article 15 of the Rome Statue, the Prosecutor of the ICC may receive information on crimes within the jurisdiction on the Court (also called ‘Communication’).
“With regards to your enquiry, the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court can confirm receipt of the communication referred to since the sender (APC) has made this fact public in the media.”
It added that the court would take all the necessary steps, which will likely include interrogating the President’s wife and others mentioned in the petition of the APC.
“The office will give consideration to this communication, as appropriate, in accordance with the provisions of the Rome Statue of the International Criminal Court, as it does with all such communications,” the email sent to our correspondent concluded.
Also, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, on Monday issued a statement made available to our correspondent.
In it, she reiterated the stance of the ICC to prosecute anyone who promotes or instigates violence before, during or after the general elections.
The ICC prosecutor noted that it had already started to conduct independent and impartial investigations and prosecution of the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Darfur, Sudan, Libya, Ivory Coast and Mali.
“The Office is also conducting preliminary examinations relating to the situations in Afghanistan, Colombia, Georgia, Guinea, Honduras, Iraq, Nigeria, Ukraine and Palestine,” the ICC said.

I’m not ready to feed Jonathan in prison – Patience

Mrs. Patience Jonathan
Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has said she is not ready to feed her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan, in prison.
The President’s wife spoke in Ado Ekiti, on Monday, during the rally of the women’s wing of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Making a reference to the All Progressives Congress, she asked, “What did they forget in Aso Rock? If you vote the PDP and Jonathan, it would be better for you. If you vote the APC, you will go to prison. How can you jail somebody for 300 years? I’m not ready to carry food to my husband inside prison oh!”
She openly admitted that the Office of the First Lady, which she occupies, is illegal.
She, however, said there was nothing wrong in a woman supporting her husband in office.

Resigning’ll amount to a disservice to Nigerians –Jega

INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega
The Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has denied allegations that he is under pressure to resign.
“I have a job to do and it would be a disservice to Nigerians for me to resign,” Jega told a town hall meeting in Abuja on Monday.
He also gave assurance that voters whose fingerprints might not be recognised by card readers would be allowed to vote after they must have filled incident forms.

Jonathan, wife planning to kill me –Father Mbaka

Ejike Mbaka
Enugu-based Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has alleged that President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, were planning to kill him over his criticism of the Federal Government and his opposition to the President’s re-election.
Mbaka, in a new video currently trending on YouTube, made the allegation during a sermon he delivered in his church.
The congregation erupted in a howl when Mbaka said, “President Jonathan and his wife are planning to kill me.”
The Roman Catholic Priest, whose recent comments on the general elections generated ripples, said the plan to assassinate him showed that the President no longer had the fear of God.
He said, “Although I sent a letter about this somewhere but I want to say this to the atmosphere. Let me say to the whole world that President Jonathan and his wife, Patience, are planning to assassinate Father Mbaka. It is a known secret, so whoever they want to use, I don’t know. They may not come themselves. They may use these unemployed people. The same people I am speaking for. I don’t know why people no longer have the fear of God.
“Do they think that killing Father Mbaka will make Jonathan and his wife win the election? Is Mbaka their problem? And a priest asked a question that touched me. He said all this while that Father Mbaka had been supporting Jonathan and his wife, did Buhari and his party make any statement to threaten him?”
Mbaka maintained that his criticism of the Jonathan administration was a divine mandate, while making allusion to the bible story of when God sent Moses to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go.
He compared his New Year message against Jonathan to Moses’ message to the Egyptian King, Pharaoh.
He said in the video, “I am just trying to tell any Pharaoh that is threatening to kill any Moses to remember what happened in Exodus chapter 12. After the Passover, the family of Pharaoh cried. They ended in the middle of the Red Sea.”
The Catholic priest said despite the threats, he would continue to discharge his duties without fear of anyone.
Mbaka also denied that Patience Jonathan gave him any money when she visited his church.
He said although President Jonathan dropped money for him through Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, he left the money with Ekweremadu and his wife. He also said that Patience Jonathan’s offering to the church was also rejected.
Mbaka launched a scathing criticism of President Jonathan last year when he gave a sermon condemning his re-election.

Monetised cars: Ekiti issues ultimatum to Fayemi’s appointees

Ekiti State Government has asked political appointees who served under the Dr Kayode Fayemi-led All Progressives Congress government to pay the balance of N109.4m for vehicles monetised to them while in office or return the cars.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ayodele Fayose, Mr Idowu Adelusi, said brand new vehicles were given to the political appointees that worked under Fayemi under the monetised policy, but 54 of the appointees refused to complete payment for the vehicles with some owing as much as N5m.
Adelusi warned them to “either pay the N109.4m or return the vehicles without delay to avert using the police to recover the vehicles from them.”
The statement said all entreaties to the APC stalwarts to pay the debt had remained abortive as letters written to them was never replied.
But Oyebode has described the allegation as another crude ploy by Fayose to harass and intimidate members of the opposition ahead of the March 28 presidential election.
In a reaction issued on behalf of others on Tuesday, he said this was the second attempt by Fayose and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to get opposition members out of circulation, “having made a similar attempt to get many of them arrested in February before the presidential election which was originally scheduled for February 14 was postponed.
Oyebode, who reminded Fayose and the State security agencies that the matter of the monetised vehicles was currently before the Ado Ekiti High Court, added that it was a policy of the immediate past administration in the state to monetise official cars to public office holders of certain categories.
“Under the arrangement, the officials are to pay 60 percent of the cost of the vehicles while the government would pay the remaining 40 percent. Under the agreement, an agreed sum was deducted monthly from the officials’ salaries while the outstanding balance would be deducted from their severance allowance at the end of their tenure.
“Severance payment to public office holders is 300 per cent of their annual basic salary and is payable at the end of their tenure in line with the directive of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
“By the time the Fayemi administration wound up on October 15, 2014, majority of the affected members were at various stages of completion of the repayment for the monetised cars, while government was also owing them some obligations including unpaid allowances, salaries and the severance allowance.

I trust Buhari but doubt his environment – Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare
The General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, on Tuesday said although he trusts the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), he doubts the credibility of “his environment.”
It was clear that Bakare was talking about Buhari’s party, the APC.
The pastor addressed Christians at the annual Lenten lecture of the Island Club in Lagos.
He enjoined Christians to vote wisely, saying , “I believe in contact without contamination.”
Bakare, who was the running mate of Buhari on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 presidential election, said he was not a politician but a nation builder.
He said whoever loses the presidential election should accept the winner and join hands to move the nation forward.
He said, “If Buhari wins, let President Goodluck Jonathan accept defeat. Whoever loses is not a loser. And if President Goodluck Jonathan wins, Buhari should accept this as the will of God.”

Switzerland to return $380million Abacha loot to Nigeria

The Swiss government has concluded plans to return $380 million to Nigeria, which is part of money stashed in Swiss banks by former dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha while he was in power.

Geneva prosecutors said today Tuesday March 17th that they ordered the money seized in Luxembourg starting in 2006 & was officially confiscated last year following an agreement between Nigeria and the Abacha family under which FG dropped its case against Abacha's son, Abba Abacha.

Switzerland has previously returned to Nigeria more than $700 million that Abacha stashed in Swiss accounts. If the Swiss government makes this new cash return, it would bring the total amount of Abacha's loot returned so far to $1.080 billion

Federal Government reduces electricity tariff by over 50%

The Federal Government has announced the reduction in electricity tariff by half. Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Sam Amadi, who made the announcement in Abuja today March 17th, said after a review of the tariffs being paid by Nigerians, the commission agreed to slash it by half. The reduction takes effect from the end of March.

He said the commission agreed to remove the Multi-year tariff order, MYTO 2.1 following multiple petitions and complains from Nigerians especially members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria who said inclusion of the MYTO 2.1 caused them to spend more on their businesses and in some cases loss of jobs.

“The Commission also invited the Chief executive Officers of the distribution companies to the hearing to respond to the case of the consumer groups. Furthermore, the Commission reviewed the technical and financial assumption of MYTO 2.1. The review shows that the major underlying cause of the skyrocketing increase in the tariff is the huge Aggregate Technical, Commercial and Collection (ATC&C) losses, which are passed through to consumers. In some DISCOs ATC&C losses increased tariff by as much as 80-103%. “…

It is the responsibility of the DISCOs to collect their revenue from their customers. Failure to do so should not be a penalty to customers who pay their bills. It is clear that removing the collection losses will lead to lower tariffs for consumers. The removal of collection losses from customer tariff has reduced tariff by more than 50 percent in some places. Please note that the reduction does not affect the CBN facility and its repayment.

“Therefore, On Monday, March 9, 2015 the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued a new order to the effect that henceforth collection loss, which is defined as the ‘amount billed but not collected’, will not be automatically passed on to consumers of electricity. Consequently, the collection loss for all DISCOs is set at zero. It is now the responsibility of DISCOs to convince the regulator of any exceptional circumstances for such loss to be passed to the consumers,” Amadi said in a statement

Developing airports into regional hubs

•Dunoma

Worried by last  November’s survey by a group, The Guide to Sleeping in Airports, which rated three of the nation’s airports among the worst in Africa, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has begun facility and infrastructure upgrade at airports, to transform some terminals into hubs for  West  and Central Africa, writes Aviation Correspondent KELVIN OSA OKUNBOR
A survey conducted by a group,  The Guide to Sleeping in Airports, has rated Nigerian airports as among the worst in Africa.
The survey cited inadequate facilities that could deny the airports their push to become hubs for the West African sub region.
Worried by the parlous rating, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has rolled out series of programmes, including facility and infrastructure upgrade, to close the gaps.
Part of the reasons for doing this is to use the airports as a catalyst for economic development.
If some Nigerian airports are developed into a hub, aviation would contribute significantly to the gross domestic product.
Experts say Nigeria is blessed by geographical location as a hub in Africa, if airport facilities are put in place to drive the process.
Transforming airports to a hub for  West and Central African regions has remained the main objective of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), its Managing Director, Saleh Dunoma, has said.
But, such ambition, he said, might not come cheap until requisite airport facilities and infrastructure have attained global standards.
International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the global industry regulator, prescribes conditions for achieving a hub status for any airport.
