Putin calls for currency union with ex-Soviet allies

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday called for a single currency with the Kremlin’s closest ex-Soviet allies despite fraying ties in the region which is struggling with the fallout from Moscow’s economic crisis.
Putin urged closer integration for his flagship Eurasian Economic Union — which also includes Belarus, Kazakhstan and Armenia — as Moscow scrambles to limit the damage from Western sanctions over Ukraine and tumbling oil prices.
“We think the time has come to discuss opportunities to form a potential currency union,” Putin said at a meeting with his Kazakh and Belarusian counterparts in Kazakhtan’s capital Astana.
“Working shoulder to shoulder, it is easier to react to external financial and economic threats, and protect our common market.”
Political and economic ties between Moscow and the bloc’s two other founding members, Belarus and energy-rich Kazakhstan, have been strained by the recent economic woes and jitters over Russia’s alleged military involvement in Ukraine.
“Major trials have befallen our union,” said Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the outset of the summit, while arguing for deeper cooperation.

FG, PDP want to arrest Tinubu, says APC

The All Progressives Congress , APC, has raised the alarm over plan by the Jonathan-led federal government and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  to arrest its national leader, Bola Tinubu and other chieftains by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  ahead of next Saturday’s election.
According to the National Publicity Secretary of the Party,  Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the government also plans to freeze the accounts of companies, individuals and organisations believed to be financing the party so as to cripple its activities.
His words:
” Without mincing words, we are aware that a RED ALERT alert has been sent to the EFCC to arrest the National Leader of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on trumped-up charges anytime from now.
” In addition, anyone who is suspected of being a financier of the APC is to be arrested, all in efforts to decapitate the main opposition party which is undoubtedly cruising to victory in the forthcoming elections.

“And as part of the offensive against the APC in the days ahead, there is a plan to freeze the accounts of companies, individuals and organisations believed to be financing the party, with the ultimate objective of crippling the party so it won’t be able to sustain its activities, like paying its agents on Election Day and other logistics.
” I am sure the question playing on your lips are: Why would anyone want to arrest APC leaders at this time? What have they done to warrant their arrest? Will there still be a level playing ground for the elections if the main opposition party is decimated just days to the polls?
“Well, we can tell you that this planned arrest is orchestrated by the same people who have sponsored a series of protests to the EFCC, on the basis of the same documentary against Asiwaju which they also masterminded. It may sound like an intrigue, but that is exactly what it is.”

Nigeria2015: Mu’azu Rules Out Landslide Victory For Jonathan, Other PDP Candidates

Adamu Mu'azuNational Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Adamu Mu’azu, has ruled out a landslide victory for the party in the forthcoming general elections.
President Goodluck Jonathan is the PDP candidate in the March 28 presidential election and for the first time since it assumed leadership of the country in 1999, the ruling party is facing its toughest competition yet from a formidable opposition – the All Progressives Congress, APC, which has a former head of state and veteran contestant, Muhammadu Buhari, as its candidate.
In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Mu’azu said while he was confident of the party winning the elections, he did not foresee a landslide victory for it.
According to him, “Our major concern in the Peoples Democratic Party is not to allow the country to be hijacked by desperadoes masquerading as purveyors of good governance, who promise heaven and earth to the people without any intention of fulfilling their election promises in the name of change.
“While I do not see a landslide victory coming, I am convinced that our party will perform creditably in the Southwest and the North of Nigeria and elsewhere in all the elections this year because the evidence is clear that despite our travails at the beginning, we have done very well over the past fifteen years of our nascent democracy since 1999 to record victory. Those who disbelieve our resilience will be surprised for victory is ours”.
Mr. Mu’azu, who assumed office as PDP national chairman at its most challenging period, said the last four years had seen Nigeria take the economic centre stage by pursuing policies that have made the country to be the economic hub of Africa, proactively investing heavily in agricultural production as the alternative to oil, pursuing legislation that will make its people to control its oil and gas resources through the petroleum industry bill which is due for enactment by this National Assembly, perhaps before the end of this parliament.

PDP Plans To Scare Voters Away Using Soldiers – El-Rufai

kaduna-state
Kaduna State gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Change (APC), Mallam Nasir el Rufai, yesterday accused the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state of allegedly engaging the Nigeria Army to scare away APC voters from the polls and create room for rigging of the governorship election in the state.
El-Rufai made the accusation in a statement signed by the Chairman, El Rufai and Kaduna State APC Campaign Organisation, Ben Kure, in Kaduna yesterday.
“The APC Kaduna State Campaign Council has been informed that soldiers have received orders to engage in massive and sustained intimidation of voters in the state. The objective is to scare people sufficiently to deter them from voting, or, if they do, from defending their votes.
“The PDP hopes thereby to reduce turnout, suppress the votes that would have been cast against it and thereby secure an illegitimate result. There seems to be no limit to the PDP’s desperation

What we told President Jonathan in Delta

FORMER national chairman of the Association of Traditional Rulers of Oil Minerals Producing Communities of Nigeria, ATROMPCON, and the paramount ruler of Siembiri clan, Burutu local government area of Delta State, HRM Charles Ayemi-Botu, aka Lion of the Niger, spoke to Saturday Vanguard on the recent visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the state, the tearing of PDP’s membership card by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the renewed war against Boko-Haram insurgency and his impression on Jonathan’s government. Excerpt.
You called for the expulsion of former President Olusegun Obasanjo before he tore the party’s membership card, how do you see the behavior and his person?
HRH Charles Ayemi-botu, N-Delta monarch
HRH Charles Ayemi-botu, N-Delta monarch
Eh, as a monarch, we are apolitical, but since what happened had to do with the interest of the public, that is why I would comment. Ordinarily, I would not have.
But taken into cognizance the personality involved, that is a former Head of State and president to have openly torn his membership card of a party, it does not augur well and does not make any sense.
One could look at it from several perspectives. Was it out of frustration? Was it to prove to the unsuspecting public that for some time he had been fraternizing with the opposition party and it is time now to come to the open by way of tearing his membership card.
