Buhari Is A better Choice To Jonathan- Soyinka

Wole Soyinka yesterday reviewed the polity ahead of the coming elections and adjudged the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, a better choice than President Goodluck Jonathan.

Prof. Soyinka in a statement entitled ‘The challenge of change –  A burden of choice’ said that while  the contest is not one between blacks and whites, saints and demons, salvation and damnation, Buhari seems to have gone through  “a plausible transformation that comes close to that of another ex-military dictator, Mathew Kerekou of the Benin Republic.”
Conversely, he said that Nigeria under President Jonathan has been subjected to “acts of outright fascism in a dispensation that is supposedly democratic. We have endured a season of stagnation in development and a drastic deterioration in the quality of existence. We are force-fed the burgeoning culture of impunity, blatantly manifested in massive corruption. We feel insulted by the courtship and indulgence of common criminals by the machinery of power.”

On the choice before the electorate, Prof. Soyinka said: “Someone in the media has called it a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea, another between Apocalypse and Salvation. The reasons are not far-fetched. They are firmly lodged in the trauma of memory and the rawness of current realities. “Well, at least one can dialogue with the devil; even dine with that creature with the proverbial long spoon. With the deep blue sea however, deceptively placid, even the best swimmers drown. The problem for some is deciding which is the devil, which is the deep blue sea. For most, instructively, the difference is clear. There are no ambiguities, no qualifications, no pause for reflection – they are simply raring to go!  I envy them.
“Through participation, direct or vicarious, we find ourselves landed within a system that has thrown up two choices – realistically speaking, that is. Formally, we dare not ignore the claims of other contestants. Of the two however, one is representative of the immediate past, still present with us, and with an accumulation of negative baggage.
“The other is a remote past, justly resented, centrally implicated in grievous assaults against Nigerian humanity, with a landscape of broken lives that continues to lacerate collective memory.”
“It is largely around this question that a choice will probably be made. It is pointlessly, and dangerously provocative to present General Buhari as something that he probably was not.  It is however just as purblind to insist that he has not demonstrably striven to become what he most glaringly was not, to insist that he has not been chastened by intervening experience and – most critically – by a vastly transformed environment – both the localised and the global.
“Of course we have been deceived before. A former ruler whom, one presumed, had been purged and transformed by a close encounter with death, and imprisonment, has turned out to be an embodiment of incorrigibility on several fronts, including a contempt for law and constitution. Would it be different this time round? Has subjection to police tear-gas and other forms of violence, like the rest of us mortals, and a spell in close detention, truly ‘civilianized’ this contender? I have studied him from a distance, questioned those who have closely interacted with him, including his former running-mate, Pastor Bakare, and dissected his key utterances past and current.
“And my findings?  A plausible transformation that comes close to that of another ex-military dictator, Mathew Kerekou of the Benin Republic.
He expressed disgust at some of the tactics deployed in the process of this political campaign which, according to him, “remain some of the most vulgar and sickening that the nation has experienced on its democratic journey.”

“Has the campaign in itself thrown up any portents for the future? Let all beware. The predator walks stealthily on padded feet, but we all know now with what lightning speed the claws flash into action. We have learnt to expect, deplore and confront certain acts in military dictatorship, but to find them manifested under supposedly democratic governance? Of course the tendency did not begin with this regime, but how eagerly the seeming meek have aspired to surpass their mentors!”
It will be recalled that Prof. Wole Soyinka, declared , February 5, 2015, that no one should vote for President Goodluck Jonathan’s and his administration in the February 14 general election, saying that there has been a total failure under the President’s leadership.
Prof. Wole Soyinka, who earlier last month, dismissed claims that he had endorsed some politicians as his presidential and governorship candidates ahead of the February elections. But with his lambast at the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, no one seems to know where he stands now.

Agbaje spoke at the PDP rallies in Mushin and Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Areas of the state.
NAN reports that the governorship candidates in the state, had earlier in the day, signed a pact for non violence before, during and after the polls.
Addressing supporters at the PDP rally in Mushin, Agbaje who spoke against the backdrop of the peace pact, said that no meaningful development could take place in an atmosphere of violence.
He noted that he was particularly happy that not a single death had been recorded since kick starting his campaign across the state.
He called on party members to continue to be law abiding. “I want to let you know that there is no reason for us to be violent because whatever the form the coming election is going to take, we shall defeat the ruling party in the state.
“Everybody has seen that we have better ideas as a party, let us continue to be peaceful because victory is ours,” he said.
According to him, the APC’s performance in the state in the last 16 years has been far from satisfactory.
Agbaje, however promised to correct gaps created by the APC under his administration, if elected.
He urged the supporters to also vote for President Goodluck Jonathan and other PDP candidates for a secured future.
NAN reports that several PDP chieftains including Chief Olabode George and Sen Musliu Obanikoro were at the rally.

It would be recalled that PDP governorship candidate for Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje has taken his campaign to whole new level.
Agbaje rode on motor bike (popularly known as Okada) to a recently held PDP rally in Lagos while his supporters cheered him on.

Jonathan Message Causes Uproar On Facebook

In recent times, social media has served a lot more purpose other than just socializing with one’s far away friends.
President Jonathan
President Jonathan
It has made the whole world to become a global village of some sort in which someone can communicate with another in  another continent within a twinkle of an eye. The essence of social media cannot be over-emphasized. This is evident in the role in the political terrain in Nigeria. Political parties and politicians who are aspiring for one post or the other make use of the various available social media to reach across to their target audience.
However as sweet as this could be, it also brings the audience closer to the politicians. This makes both the politicians and Nigerians who are the targeted audience get instant feed backs, detailing the opinions, emotions and most especially the ‘rants’ of the masses. The word ‘rants’ suggest how the target audience make use of social media to abuse the opportunity of getting across to important personalities and even politicians!
This brings Naij.com’s microscopic eyes to the recent Facebook update that President Jonathan put up few minutes ago. The post, which is meant to implore Nigerians to let peace reign in the country, even as the elections have been postponed for six weeks, however, has caused a bit of reactions from some of the followers of our president. Here’s what was posted below by the President Jonathan:
My dear friends on Facebook, I want to remind us all that we have no other country other than Nigeria and as we approach the election, it is wise that we speak good and peaceable words over Nigeria because we will have to eat our words, so let us make them sweet rather than bitter. We must see the coming polls as a contest amongst brothers and sisters from the womb of one Nigeria. We must avoid threats and desperation as we make our case to the electorate. Head or tale, Nigeria wins. Therefore, I urge all Nigerians to join me in saying it is well with Nigeria and by the special grace of God, it shall continue to be well with our great country Nigeria. GEJ.
However this simple admiration from the President got lots of varying reactions: some praising and assuring that he would be the president till 2019, some aggrieved, obviously enraged commenters lambasted him for nothing…
Read some of the comments below:
A commenter, Adeyemi Durojaye, wrote: “Nigerians beware! The joker from the ruling party is simply: take provocative decisions that will make most people clamouring for change behave irrational and cause civil unrest that will give room for election not to hold; particularly for opposition supporters in the North to behave irrational. We need to tread cautiously believe it or not the game plan is to get Nigeria disintegrated that way as many that have looted our treasury blind can secure their loots. No incumbent will be assured of victory with the level of efforts and resources committed into campaign so far will opt for shift in the goal post at the last minutes. Many wipe up religious and ethnic sentiment on this critical national issue, but the fact remains that if this game plan backfires we do not know how far it will stretch and who and who will be victims. Beware!! So the question you must ask yourself is, must your own blood and life be sacrificed for ill-gotten wealth of callous and wicked leaders we have around us today? How of their loots so far is being shared with you and family members of yours? What is the assurance that if we allow peace and truth to prevail you cannot or even children become the president of this nation someday? At least, this same Jonathan that has proven to be lie personified was a son of a fisher man. Be careful! God bless Nigeria.”

Another reader, Malcolm Victor Kingsoak, said: “First, I want to appreciate this forum. And if we are really communicating with the President of Nigeria, I wish he takes note and don’t be perturbed. Mr. President, I don’t want you to be dissuaded by the few haters who are moved by religious sentiments, political blindedness and inadequate foresight to know that under your leadership, Nigeria has moved forward. Even Jesus was hated by people from his village, so be encouraged by the teeming Nigerian who sees and appreciates your efforts so far, which has not been achieved all these years. I want you to know that there are heighths yet achieved and this next four years should be an opportunity to make those who don’t see, see that you have been and still the BEST president that Nigeria has ever had and will. God bless you and may His wisdom guide you, God bless those who encourage you, God open the eyes of those who “claim” they hate you and most importantly, God bless Nigeria.”
Olatunji Abiodun made a thought-provoking appeal too: “sir think of those who fight for this democracy in all your activities. remember that power is temporary, remember general sanni abacha’s end. we don’t want another repreat of june 12. if people still want you, they will vote you, sir, don’t impose yourself on nigeria. stop this intimidation.”
Princess Adesola Ayoola wrote: “Sir, stop patronising us we are a nation of intelligent people. There is something amiss with this last minute change of election date and I am sure I am not the only Nigeria to no longer believe that you intend to let the people have their say and vote you out. You have lost credibility not only amongst your own people but also made Nigeria a laughing stock.”
Some even went ahead cussing the president out and many more!

It would be recalled that just recently, a multi-award winning Nigerian Afrobeat musician, singer and songwriter Lagbaja told Nigerians that President Goodluck Jonathan needs the help of every Nigerian citizen to leave his office with dignity.

Election Postponement Was Actually A Lifeline For INEC - REC Reveals - Politics

By Chuks Okocha

It has emerged that the position of the security services advising against the conduct of the 2015 elections in February was actually a lifeline handed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which was ill-prepared to conduct the elections this month.

A Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) assigned to one of the northern states, who spoke to THISDAY on the condition of anonymity, said the advice by the security chiefs and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to defer the elections because of the security situation in the North-east gave INEC the much needed breather to prepare adequately for the polls.

He said contrary to reports that 21 of the RECs had opposed the postponement of the polls during their meeting at the weekend with the INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, that was not the case, as all they did was to give him situational reports on each of the 36 states of the federation and Abuja.

The INEC REC further revealed that the training and simulation exercises for INEC officials and thousands of ad hoc staff on how to use the card readers for the permanent voters’ cards during the polls had not been conducted.

“The training manual is not ready while simulations for the card readers have not been conducted. Our personnel and ad hoc staff do not know how to use the card readers, and some that have been tested were not working.

“Apart from this, over 23 million registered voters had not picked up their cards; that is about 34 per cent of registered voters. So were we going to disenfranchise them under the pretext that not all of them would vote?

“It is not INEC’s responsibility to dwell on voter apathy. Ours is to ensure that all cards get to the voters. Whether they turn out to vote or not is their prerogative, not that of INEC,” he said.

The REC said Jega had not been entirely honest when he made his presentation to the Council of State last week on the preparedness of the electoral commission for the polls.

“We were far from being ready and had we proceeded with our state of unpreparedness in February, we would have faced greater challenges than what we encountered during the 2011 general election when we were forced to postpone the elections by two weeks.

“So the insecurity in the North-east has offered INEC a lifeline to get its act together and sort out most, if not all, pending issues before the polls start on March 28,” he said.

Court Orders Papers Served On Jonathan Over Qualification For 2015 - Politics

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court has ordered that court documents in a fresh suit seeking to disqualify President Goodluck Jonathan from seeking re-election in the March 28 poll should be served on him.

The court said the papers should either be served on the president through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, or the Office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.

The suit, FHC/ABJ/CS/1112/2015, instituted by Nkemjika Nkemjika was assigned to the court of Friday. The defendants in the suit apart from Mr. Jonathan are his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

A separate suit had earlier been filed seeking Mr. Jonathan disqualification from the presidential race before the court and another is also pending at the Court of Appeal.

Mr. Nkemjika had in his ex parte application said the court’s document could not be served directly on the president because he lives in the Aso Rock Villa, which is fortified.

He had asked the court to determine whether, having regard to the provisions of sections 135(1) (b) and 135(2) (b) of the Constitution, the president was qualified to contest the presidential election.

He contended that Mr. Jonathan’s second term in office would end on May 29, because Section 135(2) (b) of the 1999 Constitution (amended) does not envisage that the vice president should complete the unexpired tenure of office or unexpired term of office of a deceased President.

According to him, the president should be qualified to contest the 2015 presidential poll if he had won an election supervised by the Senate President in 2010 in accordance with the provision of Section 146(2) of the Constitution.

Section 146(2) provides that: “Where any vacancy occurs in the circumstances mentioned in sub-section 1 of this section during a period when the office of the Vice-President is also vacant, the President of the Senate shall hold the office of the President for a period of not more than three months, during which there shall be an election of a new President, who shall hold office for the unexpired term of office of the last holder of the office.”

Mr. Nkemjika asked the court to remove Mr. Jonathan’s as the presidential candidate of PDP in view of the provision of Section 135(1)(b) of the Constitution, which states: “Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, a person shall hold office of the President until he dies whilst holding such office.”

The judge subsequently adjourned the suit to February 26.

Disqualification: APC & Buhari Reject Court's Orders Of Service - Politics

The All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, have opposed the orders of a Federal High Court in Abuja, directing that they be served through substituted means‎ in a suit challenging Buhari’s eligibility to stand for the March 28 poll.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola had, in two separate suits challenging Buhari’s eligibility to contest in the election, last week granted ex parte orders permitting the plaintiffs to serve the defendants in the suits through newspaper publications.

The court had also granted an order of abridgment of time within which the defendants must respond to the suits.

The plaintiffs in the separate suits are Chukwunweike Okafor and Max Ozoaka. They were represented in court by their lawyers on Monday.

Apart from Buhari and the APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission is a defendant in the two suits.

On Monday, Buhari and his party, through their lawyers, told the court that they would file applications challenging the competence of the suits and the entire steps taken in the suit so far, including the orders of service through substituted means.

Though, both Buhari and the APC had yet to file any papers in the suit, their lawyers – Chief Wole Olanipekun and Lateef Fagbemi – urged the court to adjourn the matter to enable them to file all the necessary documents.

Fagbemi also urged the court to ‎set aside the order of abridgment of time within which the defendants must file their responses, arguing that the granting of the order hinged on urgency, had already been diminished with the postponement of the poll from February 14 to March 28.

The judge then adjourned till February 23.

There are at least three other suits ‎seeking an order directing INEC to disqualify Buhari from participating in the poll because he among other things, failed to attach evidence of his academic qualifications to the form he submitted to the electoral body.

‎The plaintiffs are in their separate suits contending that the INEC FORM CF 001 submitted to INEC by the APC candidate submitted to INEC was incomplete and therefore urged the court to declare the form as incompetent.

They further stated that the failure of Buhari to accompany the INEC Form with evidence of his educational qualifications and evidence of his birth certificate or affidavit of declaration of age had altogether rendered the form inchoate.

Ozoaka, in a supporting affidavit to the originating summons, stated that the INEC Form submitted by Buhari did not meet the requirements under sections 31(1)(2) & (3), and 31(cool of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

2015 Election Not War But Contest Among Brothers, Sisters — Jonathan - Politics

2015 polls not war but contest among brothers, sisters—Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan, has counselled Nigerians to speak good and peaceable words over the country, stressing that the 2015 polls is a contest among brothers and sisters from the womb of one Nigeria.

“I want to remind us all that we have no other country other than Nigeria and as we approach the election, it is wise that we speak good and peaceable words over Nigeria because we will have to eat our words, so let us make them sweet rather than bitter. We must see the coming polls as a contest amongst brothers and sisters from the womb of one Nigeria,” he said.

He urged political gladiators to avoid the use of threats and desperations in their campaign, noting that whatsoever be the outcome of the polls that victory should be for Nigeria and Nigerians.

“We must avoid threats and desperation as we make our case to the electorate. Head or tale, Nigeria wins. Therefore, I urge all Nigerians to join me in saying it is well with Nigeria and by the special grace of God, it shall continue to be well with our great country Nigeria,” he added.

He made this known on his official Facebook page, Goodluck Jonathan, which boast of almost two million followers

Jega’s Tenure Ends On March 24, 2015 By Operation Of Law. - Politics

In the interest of full disclosure, let me say from the outset that this piece is nonpartisan. It is, instead, an apolitical academic exercise, primarily intended as a simple legal treatise, without being personal, on the legalities of tenure of Prof Attahiru Jega as INEC Chairman. Having said that, let me then give reasons why Jega’s tenure legally or actually comes to end on March 24, 2015, instead of the presumptive June 24, 2015.

Jega was appointed by President Jonathan on June 8, 2010, and confirmed by the Senate on June 24, 2010. Under the law, his tenure runs for five years. Mathematically, therefore his tenure ‘exactly’ ends on June 24, 2015, counting from the date of Senate confirmation.

But accordingly to extant rules and our time-honored conventions, his tenure ‘actually’ comes to an end on March 24 because he is required, without more, to compulsorily proceed on terminal leave three months to the mathematical end of his tenure. And this is being very generous because, if you go by the ‘doctrine of relation back’, a strong case can be made that his terminal leave shall commence on March 8 (the date he was appointed), instead of March 24 (the date he was confirmed).

For those who might argue otherwise, there are legions of precedents, including, most notably, that of Jega’s predecessor, Prof Maurice Iwu. Iwu’s tenure was due to expire on June 13, 2010. However, on April 28, 2010, then acting President Jonathan, ordered Iwu to proceed on terminal leave. That Iwu’s own terminal leave was less than three months to his mathematical five years was probably a matter of expediency of that turbulent era and presidential grace, to boot.

In recent times, we have seen other equally constitutionally-tenured public servants proceed on terminal leave before the exact date of expiration of their tenure. Here are few examples. Former IGP Abubakar’s tenure was due to end on July 30, 2014 but he proceeded or was sent on terminal leave on May 12, 2014. Former Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Dahiru Musdapher voluntarily proceeded on terminal leave three months before the constitutional or mathematical end of his tenure. Ditto for former PCA, Justice Salami, even though his own was somewhat exceptional because he was on suspension when his terminal leave clock began to tick. I might add that Salami fought his for its exceptional equities but still lost. Jega has no such equities.

To underscore that there are no exceptions, the Federal Government, in a well-received circular issued by the former Head of Service, Alhaji Isa Bello Sali, had “called on those affected to comply with immediate effect by observing the three months terminal leave as provided for in the extant Rules”. Unarguably, those affected included, without exceptions, all public servants that have constitutional or legal tenure, either based on fixed tenure-track, as in the case of Iwu, Jega, etc; or straight retirement based on 35 years service (the IGP) or age (Justice Musdapher).

According to the circular, which is captioned ‘Three Months Pre-Retirement/Terminal Leave’, the government stated that “It has been observed that the mandatory notice of retirement for officers who are due to retire is not being observed as provided for in the extant rules. Accordingly, it has become necessary to reiterate the provisions of Public Service Rules (PSR) 100238 which states that officers are required to give three months notice of their retirement from service terminating on the effective date of their retirement”. For avoidance of doubt, the term retirement, in context, applies, mutatis mutandis, to those on fixed tenure like Jega.

The circular was addressed and sent to the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Justice of the Federation, all Ministers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, Chairman Federal Civil Service Commission, the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Others are Heads of extra-ministerial departments, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Auditor-General of the Federation, Surveyor-General of the Federation, Directors-General/chief executives of parastatals and agencies.

So, as we can see from above, it is left for Jega to decide between these two options: It is either he voluntarily proceeds on his terminal leave by March 24, 2015, or he may be forced to do so by executive fiat. If, however, he is emboldened to sit tight, he has to know that any extra day he spends in office beyond March 24 is not by any force of law but by the sheer good graces of President Jonathan.

Real Reason For Shift In Dates Is Poor Preparation, Not Insecurity – Presidency

Incumbent Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan is supposedly angry with Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, over the reason presented for the shift of the polls.

TheCable published an exclusive report on this, trying to understand why President wants to replace INEC chairman.
Attahiru Jega had announced the adjustment in dates from February 14 and 28 to March 28 and April 11 correspondingly to a letter written by the military over its “inability” to give security for the polls because of current operations against Boko Haram insurgency.
While speaking with journalists the representative of president said Jega was being “clever by half” and was trying to “pass the buck” in order to hide INEC’s poor arrangements for the polls.

The official, who wants to stay unnamed, said:
Jega was not sincere at all.  The collection of PVCs was to end last Saturday and 23 million cards were yet to be distributed. Why was Jega not man enough to admit they would have bungled the elections if the dates had remained unchanged?”
The source, who is a presidential assistant, said that the security issue was just one of the several factors that required the postponement in the dates “but Jega has cleverly gone to tell the whole world that it was the security agencies that forced him to change the dates.”
He continued: “Jega was also silent on the fact that the machines that would be deployed to read the cards had not been tested and its officials had not even been trained on how to use them, while there is yet no consolidated voter register. Jega himself admitted to his commissioners that the election would have ended in chaos if INEC had gone ahead. The letter written by the chief of defence staff was the perfect excuse for him to shift the polls and heap all the blame on security”.
President Jonathan had grown suspicious of Jega, the official continued, because of the “lopsidedness” in the organization of the PVC delivery exercise and the statements of the INEC chairman on Saturday are considered to have worsened matters.

Meanwhile, Jega himself has said he has no reason to resign but would do so if he has to.

Section 132 (2) of the constitution allows for elections to be held up till April 30, and this had further fuelled fears that the country may be plunged into a crisis if Jega is asked to proceed on terminal leave.
The shift in the dates shocked Nigerian society. The main opposition party All Progressives Congress has immediately blamed presidency trying to stay longer.
While the ruling party said, it has no benefits from the postponement

Jonathan's Campaign Billboard Burnt In Abuja After Poll Shift - Politics

A campaign billboard of the Peoples Democratic Party bearing the photograph of President Goodluck Jonathan was set ablaze in the early hours of Saturday by an unidentified man.

The incident was said to have taken place following earlier rumours that the Independent National Electoral Commission had postponed the February 14, 2015 Presidential election.

The billboard is located on the ever-busy Suleija-Kaduna Expressway at the Federal Housing junction, beside the office of the National Emergency Management Agency in Kubwa.

On it was boldly written, “On February 14, vote Goodluck, vote PDP…The Goodluck Thumb.”

THE PUNCH learnt that the arsonist drove to the billboard, parked his car, brought out a tyre and set it on fire.

But the arsonist, according to officials of NEMA, who pleaded anonymity, came back in the night and on seeing that the fire didn’t do much damage poured petrol on another tyre and set it ablaze.

It was not however clear who was responsible and what prompted it.

But a taxi driver within the vicinity, who simply identified himself as Yahaya, said, “The incident happened following earlier rumours that the February 14 presidential election has been postponed.”

Our correspondent saw ashes of the burnt billboard during a visit to the site on Sunday.

Some youths had recently pelted the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan in Katsina and Bauchi states and burnt his campaign vehicles in Jos.

The Nigeria Posterity Project had expressed concern over the use of stones and destruction of campaign posters belonging to Jonathan by some northern youths.

According to the organisation, northern leaders should tone down their utterances and allow free campaigns by all candidates in all parts of the country.

The National Coordinator of the NPP, Mr. Louis Ebodaghe, had said, “The burning of President Jonathan’s campaign vehicles in parts of the North and the pulling down of his posters in parts of the North can only be likened to Nazi Germany where, for the fear of Hitler, everybody must fly the Nazi flag even against their conscience. This cannot be tolerated in modern day Nigeria and should not be encouraged.”

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress in Cross River has disclosed plans to embark on a One- Million Youth March in the state to reiterate support for the party’s presidential candidate, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), despite the poll shift.

The party condemned the postponement of the general elections earlier scheduled for February 14 and 28, saying it was obvious that the leadership of the PDP was afraid of impending defeat at the polls.

Speaking on behalf of the party after a crucial meeting on Sunday, the state APC Youth Leader, Mr. Effiom Otu, said the youth wing of the party would organise a one-million youth march in solidarity with the APC presidential candidate and other APC candidates to garner support for the party ahead of the elections.

Otu also said the youths had endorsed a door-to-door campaign for the party, adding that the objective was to educate and sensitise the electorate in order for them to be convinced.

He said the campaign would ensure that all the 2,283 polling units in the state were aggressively covered in the exercise.

Otu said, “We will organise a one-million youth march in the state capital soon in solidarity with our presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and other candidates to garner more support for the party ahead of the elections.

“We (the youths) have endorsed a door-to-door campaign for the party in the state. The objective is to ensure that those who hold suspicious view about the person and capacity of the party candidates for the election are educated and sensitised to jettison their held conviction.”

He castigated the Presidency for using insecurity as a reason for the polls shift, explaining that there was no strength in the argument advanced for the postponement.

Otu said, “The Presidency was caught in another web of cajoling by feigning insecurity as the reason for the postponement because it could not convincingly pull through the issue of PVCs collection as initial reason for the shift.

Presidency Shops For Jega’s Replacement - Vanguard News - Politics

By Soni Daniel, Regional Editor, North

ABUJA — With the successful postponement of the elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the Presidency has launched a two-pronged war to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan wins the election convincingly.
Anambra Supplementary Election: INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega addressing pressmen , announcing November 30 for Supplementary election at Anambra State while National Commissioner Lawrence Nwuruku looks on in Abuja. Photo by Gbemiga Olamikan.

The two strategies are to stop Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress candidate from contesting the election with Jonathan and the replacement of the INEC Chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, with a less independent-minded person. Jega, it was gathered, had been described by hawks around the president of being too independent-minded and ‘uncooperative’ despite being given the job on a platter of gold by the president’s men.
Vanguard learnt that Jega might have unwittingly played into the hands of the forces arrayed against him by agreeing to shift the elections.

Legal war to disqualify Buhari

Competent sources said last night that the move to remove Jega and the legal fireworks against Buhari, would be taken up simultaneously with effect from this week given the timeframe made possible by the shift.

The retired general is to be prosecuted by a team of legal luminaries for ‘lying on oath’ that he had a school certificate with the Nigerian Army when he knew that it was untrue. The plaintiffs are said to have settled for trying Buhari for alleged ‘perjury’ instead of outright non-possession of certificate following legal advice that the latter would be more difficult to prove within the time at their disposal.

Vanguard learnt that although Jega reluctantly succumbed to pressure from the Presidency and its security chiefs to shift the polls, he might still not be allowed by the forces to conduct the rescheduled elections between March 28 and April 11.

Vanguard gathered from competent sources that the Presidency was no longer comfortable with Jega and was, therefore, working tirelessly to get him out of the commission to pave the way for a more ‘trusted hand’ to conduct the rescheduled elections.

It was learnt that the forces arrayed against the INEC boss had convinced the President not to renew Jega’s tenure, which is expected to lapse on June 13 this year. The forces, it was learnt, felt that Jega was rather too ‘difficult’ to deal with, having not allowed himself to be dictated to by anyone since assuming office like other appointees of the government.

It was learnt that in a bid to sweep off Jega from his seat without raising any dust, he would be asked to comply with the civil service procedure by proceeding on his three months terminal leave with effect from March 1, this year since he is expected to retire on June 13.

S-West gov’s brother may replace Jega

Vanguard gathered that in his place, the Presidency was considering bringing in another academic from the South-West, who is currently heading a tertiary institution in the country. The professor of Political Science and International Relations is said to be a sibling of a serving governor in the South-West, who is a close ally of President Goodluck Jonathan and his party.
Competent sources also told Vanguard last night that although the name of the academic had been made known in security circles, it was not clear whether the man had been cleared by the forces with a view to sending his name to the National Assembly for possible confirmation, as required by law.
Working against Jonathan’s interest

As a prelude to removing Jega from office, some close allies of the President had started accusing him of taking side with the opposition to undermine the success of Jonathan and his party in the next election. Earlier last week, Jonathan’s godfather, Chief Edwin Clark and other prominent politicians from the Southern part of the country had accused Jega of working against the interest of the president and the PDP and asked him to resign from the commission.

Although no evidence was adduced by Clark and his group to support their allegation, they nonetheless called for the arrest of Jega. Similarly, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, on Saturday, said Jega had lied about the state of the commission’s preparedness for the conduct of the election.

In the same vein, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh, accused INEC of working with the opposition to deny its members of permanent voter cards in some states. He called on the security agents to probe the commission over the development.

4 Ways To Identify "SCAMMERS" On Most Online Market Platform Like OLX Nigeria - Business

The act of duping people off thier money is becoming an increasing trend among some group of persons at OLX, TRADE STABLE, KAYMU and even FACEBOOK who parade themselves as "customs officers"

i have become so irritated and tired of this things, yet i keep seeing them, so i taught that for this people to keep doing this act, some nigerian must be falling victims to them, so this piece is to help us identify them and help someone today!

here are the things you should look out for next time you searching or shoping on some online platforms

1. THE NAME OF THE SELLER (e.g CUSTOM PETER)
This one is most common on facebook for those selling cars as most of them creates new accounts and thier first name becomes "custom".
Nigeria custom do not attach the initial or prefix "customs" to thier names so be ware, they are not custom officers. they are liers.
other names you may see @olx are MR. BEN, MR. CHUCKS CUSTOM etc...

2. RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP PRICE
They will put a price tag that will almost at once capture your attention. imagine a bb q10 selling for #20,000 ... hmmm!! and to make it worse, they will say its negotiable... I'd say, run for your life grin

3. PHOTOS & LOCATION CONFLICT
this part i call cheap scam...
they use one same foto to advertise an item @lekki, again use it to advertise @ikorodu.
if they must scam they should do better than showing us an image of a bb q10 with seller @lekki, same image of q10 for another seller @apapa. shine your eyes oo shocked shocked

4 ASKING FOR DELIVERY FEE
once you call them, they will ask you to pay "delivery fee" of the item so they can bring it to your door step due to distance ish... cheap SCAM!!!

these i the few i can point out at the moment...
these people made google trader unbearable, lets not let them ruin others like OLX...
you can add to the list

Boko Haram Attacks Yobe Barracks, Nigerian Village - Politics

Boko Haram fighters on Sunday waged attacks on a barracks in Yobe State and a southeastern border town in Niger Republic, where a blast killed at least one person and left 10 injured, witnesses and hospital sources said.

The Islamist militants launched their assault around the town of Diffa in Niger before dawn, two days after launching its first major attack on Friday in the area bordering Nigeria, witnesses quoted by AFP said.

The cause of the deadly blast in Diffa was not immediately known, with some sources describing it as a suicide attack while others referred to it as a bomb or a mortar shell.

Similarly members of the terror group were reported to have launched an attack on a military barracks in Gaida, Yobe State.

Although details on the barracks onslaught were sketchy at press time yesterday, sources said they could hear the heavy exchange of gunfire between the terrorists and Nigerian soldiers attempting to defend the military facility.

However, in a bid to stem the attacks in North-eastern Nigeria and neighbouring countries, Nigeria, Chad, Niger, Cameroun and Benin Republic at the weekend pledged to deploy 8,700 troops, police and civilians as part of a regional effort to fight Boko Haram terrorists.

“The representatives of Benin, Cameroun, Niger, Nigeria and Chad have announced contributions totalling 8,700 military personnel, police and civilians,” the countries said in a statement after a meeting in Cameroun's capital, Yaounde.

The announcement came out of a three-day summit focused on organising the force that will battle the Islamist militants, who are engaged in a worsening six-year insurgency centred in Northeastern Nigeria.

However, it may be some time before the multinational effort goes into action, as nations will continue in coming days to thrash out the details of each government's contribution as well as the budget.

Country representatives at the summit agreed to launch a mission to “foster a safe and secure environment in the impacted regions" and tackle an insurgency that has killed at least 13,000 people and pushed more than a million from their homes since 2009, reported the AFP.

African Union leaders will submit the plan for the force crafted by Western and African experts to the UN Security Council for approval.

Boko Haram attacks have increasingly spilled over from Nigeria into neighbouring nations.

Their first major assault in Niger on Friday triggered a forcible response from Chadian and Nigerien troops.

Niger's defence minister reported that 109 of the Islamists were killed in the fighting, along with four soldiers and a civilian. Seventeen other troops were wounded.

The United States said it condemned the attack in the “strongest possible terms” and pledged support for regional forces.

“This unchecked killing must stop,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. “We continue to provide support to governments in the region, including through intelligence sharing, and are increasing our support for these efforts.”

US intelligence officials said Friday that while Boko Haram is flush with cash and weapons after a string of battlefield advances, the terrorists could face a tougher fight with Nigeria’s neighbours.

The military intervention of neighbouring powers could potentially be a “game changer in a positive way,” one intelligence official said.

Meanwhile, Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai at the weekend called for global support to help release more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, as they marked 300 days as hostages.

“As we mark this tragic 300th day of captivity for hundreds of kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls, I call on people everywhere to join me in demanding urgent action to free these heroic girls,” she said.

Boko Haram terrorists seized 276 teenagers from the Government Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok, Borno State on the evening of April 14 last year.

Fifty-seven managed to escape but 219 are still being held, despite military claims that they had been located but that a rescue operation was too fraught with danger to be conducted.

The girls' abduction and subsequent claims from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau that they have been forcibly converted to Islam or married off sparked global outrage.

The hashtag #BringBackOurGirls trended on social media and saw prominent figures, including US First Lady Michelle Obama, tweet their support, as well as global street protests.

Malala, 17, who was shot by the Pakistani Taliban for defying threats about her attending school, visited Nigeria in July last year to urge President Goodluck Jonathan to take action.

Jonathan has been widely criticised for what has been seen as a lacklustre response to the crisis and for failing to end the deadly, six-year insurgency.
Malala at the weekend said the government in Abuja and the international community “can and must do much more to resolve this crisis and change their weak response to date”.

“If these girls were the children of politically or financially powerful parents, much more would be done to free them,” the children's rights campaigner added in a statement.

“But they come from an impoverished area of North-east Nigeria and sadly, little has changed since they were kidnapped,” she said.

Malala said politicians who secure a win at the polls should commit to making the Chibok girls’ release and the education of all Nigerian children, a priority in their first 100 days in office.

“Let's end this horrible saga now. Leaders must make sure the #BringBackOurGirls effort results in a real outcome: the return of the Chibok girls,” she added.

We’ll No Longer Condone Opposition- Sponsored Protests – PDP - Politics

Our attention has been drawn to a text message being circulated by a nebulous group under the name, Save Democracy Youth Movement , calling on the Minister of Petroleum and the Minister of Finance to tender their resignations before the 11th of February 2015, citing unfounded allegations as reason.

We have information that this unwarranted attack is sponsored by the opposition which also has plans to follow up the text messages with sponsored protests in Abuja and Lagos to further heat-up the system ahead of the February 14, 2015 general elections.

From all indications, this senseless attack is aimed at demonizing our women folk who have been playing key roles in the laudable achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
Indeed, it bears the full imprints of the opposition which has not hidden its aversion to women holding important positions in our country, in keeping with their ideology which prescribes that no woman, no matter how brilliant should be heard or seen.

Furthermore, we invite Nigerians to note the timing of the text message and the planned protest, merely few days before the February 14 election date. This leaves no one in doubt about the plot by the opposition to stir up civil unrests ahead of the polls as part of the greater agenda to scuttle the electoral process.
In any case, we wish to inform the opposition that as the largest political party in the country, we will no longer continue to condone unjustified sponsored attacks on our party and/or our elected and appointed officers. The fact that we have remained calm and peaceful despite the numerous provocations does not in anyway suggest that we will allow ourselves to be cowed by the enemies of peace, unity and stability of our dear nation.

We remain confident that our Presidential flagbearer, President Goodluck Jonathan is running on his enviable record of performance and achievements in virtually all sectors of our national life for which the electorate are eager to demonstrate their appreciation by re-electing him come February 14th.

We therefore call on all lovers of democracy and the security agencies to note the sinister agenda of the opposition and hold them responsible should there be any breach of the peace before, during and after the elections.

Signed:

Olisa Metuh

'Until I Say Otherwise, There Will Be No Elections' – Tunde Bakare - Politics

Clergyman and social critic, Tunde Bakare, has said there would be no elections in the country until he lifts an “injunction” he placed on it. He claimed to have predicted the poll shift by demonstrating with a chair he placed on the altar in his church during a previous worship service. Bakare is the Senior Pastor, Latter Rain Assembly and one time vice presidential candidate to General Muhammadu Buhari on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC.

Speaking at his church’s Sunday service, at Ogba, in Lagos, Bakare stated that the postponement has vindicated him against vilification from those opposed to his earlier view on the matter. In his sermon, titled “Sweet and Sour Ministry Of The Prophet”, Bakare likened his prophesy to that of biblical prophet Elijah, who declared that “there would neither be dew nor rain except at my word”. Bakare claimed that his statement on the shifting of the elections and the inauguration of an interim national government during the interregnum was divinely inspired. “There shall be a performance of every word that proceedeth (sic) from the mouth of God”, he stated. The gadfly pastor, then, admonished the congregation on what should be their disposition when reviled for their views. He deplored the condemnations his earlier statement generated, saying “It is a mark of immaturity to abuse another person for his opinion”. Bakare said though he had been accused of belonging to either the PDP or the APC, he declared he is not a member of any.

“Did I speak to INEC or was I at the Council of States meeting?; there was no telephone conversation between me and (Attahiru) Jega or (Sambo) Dasuki, why then are you attacking me for the postponement?”, he asked rhetorically. Though he did not name anyone, Bakare mocked some people he said have become depressed by the postponement. “You are full of yourself, full of your abracadabra, full of what you can do to make things happen; what is my concern if you have spent money,” he stated.

Five Countries To Send 8,700 Troops To Help Jonathan's Govt. Fight Boko Haram - Politics

How A Mature Man Couldn't Control His Urge Even In BRT Standing Queue - Romance

Ok, This happened right before my eyes inside BRT yesterday..I just got back from church and decided to take a BRT bus from Cele to Ikotun..During rush hours like Say between 6:30 a.m-12pm/ 2pm-7:30pm, The regular buses hype their fare from #100 to about 300 naira........it gets really annoying that many people wud rather queue for hours , waiting for BRT buses that charges a constant fare of 50 naira.......This being the case, most times, u can find like 2 sections of people waiting for the BRT bus...The Standing and the Sitting section , with each section containing like 200 n more people respectively (No jokes oh)Depending on the time and location.....E.g Oshodi-Apapa and back BRT Stands, Cele-Ikotun stands etc.....

When I got to the BRT stand, I decided to join the standing Queue that seemed to have lesser number of people... By the time it got to my turn, The bus was so full to the Brim.....A standard BRT bus can take about 45 sitters and then say 49 standers..NB: (Its the loaders and drivers that choke up the bus Cus they get to share the fare from the standers hence the more standers, the more money to share per time)..... You can now imagine how choked up the bus was but I still insisted I must enter the Bus...I had to struggle my way into the bus interior to find a reasonable place to stand, even though other passengers kept saying "No Space, Where u dey go?, Oti Kun" etc....... Finally, One good Samaritan man Cleared a Space in front of him for me and I thanked him and entered.Little did I know that this man was on heat and needed to express his Libido.

The bus moved almost immediately and the next thing o, this man started taking advantage of portholes......When we get to a porthole which wud always make the bus stagger, this man wud just thrust forward without conrol and hit me with his pelvic region...Ah ah!, Initially mehn!, I said to my self " Na the port Hole they cause am "...Each time, I was doing my best to create space between us but the man somehow use porthole excuse to close the gap...in like few mins to our journey, I realized that this man no longer had a flat Pelvis oh!, it was now a growing Protrusion.Henh!, That was when I decided I'm migrating Mbok!. I bin want shout for am but I remembered he was the one who offered me space so I just jejely pushed my way to his back.....He turned and looked at me n I maintained my cool to avoid drama.....I left the girl that was in front of Me at his mercy and I was watching from behind...

I pity the girl o, cause there was traffic....After like 30 secs, he closed the gap I left and started devouring this mumu girl way no notice.......I was watching his body language...After some time he started shaking and sweating , That was the moment......He Ejaculated....Gross!!!!.....He then crossed one of his leg on the other so the Liquid wudnt fall and people wudnt notice....That was when I saw the wet patches on his jeans .......One old mama and another girl also noticed but we just laughed and faced our journey.............How Shameless!!!!!

LOVE GONE SOUR: Girl Bathes Boyfriend With Acid

A 16-year- old lover girl, identified as Maureen (surname withheld) in Emede Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State at the weekend, allegedly bathed her boyfriend with acid for cheating on her in the last three months of their relationship.
Reports said the girl, now in the police net in the community, upon interrogation by the police confessed to the crime, saying that her boyfriend violated the oath they took together.
It was reliably gathered that the victim was caught while making love to another girl right in a hotel within the community, a situation, when the suspect was informed about it, raced to the hotel where she attacked him with acid water.
DSP Celestina Kalu, police public relations officer in the state, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that the suspect claimed she was angered by the violation of their oath by the victim.
“I was determined to teach my boyfriend a lesson. So I went into my father’s car park where I picked an acid water to teach him a bitter lesson,” he said.
Sources said the acid water was allegedly poured on the victim’s penis, a situation that may render him impotent. But DSP Kalu said the victim was admitted into a private hospital where he is currently being treated, adding that the suspect would be charged to court on completion of investigation.
