INEC extends voting till Sunday

WOMEN FROM AN INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS (IDPs) CAMP, WAITING TO VOTE AFTER ACCREDITATION DURING THE PRESIDENTIAL AND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS IN MAIDUGURI ON SATURDAY

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended voting during the Presidential and National Elections to Sunday in problem areas
It directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners in the country to conduct election on
Sunday in areas where there were hitches.
It said it has also relocated all the contents on its website to another site following hacking by some elements.
It however said it could not still exactly say what went wrong in Otuoke, Bayelsa State which led to the delay in the accreditation of President Goodluck Jonathan and First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan.
The Chairman of INEC Committee on Information and Voters Education, Mr. Chris Iyimoga, who addressed the press at the Media Centre of the National Collation Centre in Abuja, said with some hitches in some parts of the country, there was no way the Presidential and National Assembly Elections could be concluded today (Saturday) .
He said: “Each REC has been informed to conduct election on Sunday where there are hitches with accreditation or voting. I cannot say exactly the number of states affected but the problems are not in all the states.”
Other National Commissioners  at the briefing were Ishmael Igbani; Muhammadu Wali; Engr. Nuru Yakubu; and Gladys Nwafor.
On his part, National Commissioner Igbani said: “No one can really say what went wrong in Otuoke but the machine or the card readers could not capture the fingerprints of the President and the First Lady. Where such a situation, we had to use manual system.”
On the hacking of INEC website, Commissioner Nuru Yakubu said: “We have lifted the contents on our website and relocated to other site.”

INEC battles to restore website

INEC website 2
Computer engineers from the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) are battling to re-host the commission’s website that was hacked into earlier on Saturday by a group that called itself Nigerian Cyber Army/Team.
The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Mr.Kayode Idowu, said the message posted on the website by the hackers has been taken down preparatory to the re-hosting of the website.
A short message by INEC on the website said: “We will be back soon!
“Sorry for the inconvenience but we are performing some maintenance at the moment. We will be back online shortly! Site should be back up soon.”
The hacking occurred midway into the accreditation of voters for Saturday’s elections.
The hackers posted the following on the website: “StruCk By Nigerian Cyber Army | TeaM NCA.”
“Sorry xD Your Site has been STAMPED by TeaM Nigerian Cyber Army FEEL SOME SHAME ADMIN!!”
“Security is just an illusion, Remember US :DGREETINGS OF PEACE TO CITIZEN OF NIGERIA FROM TEAM NCA NIGERIANS No Body Can Give You Freedom No Body Can Give You Equality Or Justice If You Are A Man/Woman YOU TAKE IT.”

Who becomes Nigeria’s first lady: extrovert patience or introvert Aisha?

Patience Jonathan and Aisha Buhari
The Nigerian constitution does not recognise the office of the First Lady which is a title for the spouse of the head of state or president of Nigeria. However, the office has remained one of the most funded and staffed since independence and the First Lady is addressed by the title Her Excellency.
Nigeria has had several first ladies since independence but the late Maryam Babangida, wife of Nigeria’s military president from 1985 to 1993, General Ibrahim Babagida, began the trend.
As first lady, she launched many programmes to improve the lives of women. The “Maryam Phenomenon” became a celebrity and “an icon of beauty, fashion and style,” a position she retained after her husband’s fall from power.
When her husband became Head of State in 1985, Maryam Babangida moved into Dodan Barracks in Lagos. She was said to have arranged for considerable renovations to make the rooms more suitable for formal receptions. As First Lady of Nigeria between 1985 and 1993, she turned the ceremonial post into a champion for women’s rural development. She founded the Better Life Programme for Rural Women in 1987, which launched co-operatives, cottage industries, farms and gardens, shops and markets, women’s centres and social welfare programmes. The Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development was established in 1993 for research, training, and to mobilise women towards self-emancipation.

Poll: 30, 009 policemen for North-East, Ebonyi, Imo

Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, has deployed no fewer than 20, 000 police personnel for the general elections in the North-East.The Nigerian Police have deployed 30,009 police personnel in the North-East, Imo and Ebonyi states.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Hillari Okpara, who is to coordinate security activities in the North-Eastern states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe, gave the hint on Friday in Bauchi.
He said the policemen had been trained and adequately motivated for effective service delivery.
Okpara urged voters to feel free to cast their votes, but asked them to stay away from polling units at least 200 metres after they must have voted.
“We have provided adequate security for the electorate, local and international observers,” he said.
On allegation by the All Progressives Congress that the Bauchi State Governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, had recruited over 3,000 vigilantes and kitted them to intimidate voters, the police boss said only statutorily empowered security agencies would monitor the election.

56m Nigerians to choose between Jonathan, Buhari

Buhari vs Jonathan

The figure represents 81.9 per cent of the total number of 70,383,427 voters that registered for the election. No fewer than 56 million Nigerians will file out today to elect the next president in an election believed to be the keenest in the history of the country.
The ruling Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and the opposition All Progressives Congress candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) are once again asking for Nigerians’ votes in this year’s general elections to enable them to lead the country.
The two political gladiators contested in the 2011 general elections won by Jonathan. But this year’s election has generated much tension across the country following the near equal strength of the two major presidential candidates in the poll.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had in February shifted the general elections as a result of insecurity in the North-East and poor distribution of the Permanent Voter Cards.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, had said that the commission was empowered by Section 26 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) to shift national elections due to some factors.
He explained that the postponement followed reports by the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) and other service chiefs that their agencies would not be able to guarantee security of the commission’s personnel in some parts of the country. Jega had denied that INEC was forced to shift the polls, adding that the electoral body took the best decision under the prevailing circumstances.

Call errant security agencies to order, Buhari tells Jonathan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (ret) has call on Prsident Goodluck Jonathan to call errant security agencies to order.
Buhari made this known in a press statement on Friday.
Buhari and Jonathan
Buhari and Jonathan
The statement read thus
The Abuja Peace Accords Must Be Worth Their Wordings
On Thursday, March 26th, President Goodluck Jonathan and I signed a new accord reinforcing our commitment to violent-free elections.
The new accord is a follow up to the Abuja Accord which we signed, along with nine other party leaders, on Jan. 14th 2015, to show our commitment to free, fair and credible elections in our dear country.
I take these accords very seriously, and this has reflected in the issues-based campaign which I ran all through the period of electioneering campaign, despite the provocative and sleazy campaign directed at my person and my party.
But recent developments across the country, ahead of Saturday’s elections, run against the contents and spirit of the peace accords.

Police arrest Okorocha’s SSA, 4 others for stockpiling arms

Imo State Police Command yeaterday in Owerri, arrested Mr. Okechukwu Okorocha, the Senior Special Adviser, SSA, on Security Matters, to Governor Rochas Okorocha, for allegedly stockpiling arms and ammunition apparently for the purpose of disrupting election in the State.
Similarly, four members of Imo Security Network, ISN, a security contraption established by the Rochas Okorocha administration, are also cooling their heels in police cells for the same offence.
Parading the suspects before newsmen at the State Police Headquarters, Owerri, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Austin Evbakhavbokun, said that the arrest of the security aide and ISN personnel, followed a tip off.
“The arrest of the SSA and the illegal security personnel followed a very reliable tip off and subsequent search operation conducted by the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, at his house and premises led to the recovery of the arms and ammunitions”, the CP said.

Card Readers: How Abuja court aborted last minute move to stop ‎election

ABUJA – Last minute move by a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from Ogun state,‎ Mr. Walihu Taiwo‎, to secure an interim order of injunction stopping the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from using the Smart Card Reader Machines for the presidential election, crumbled yesterday.
‎The application which was filed before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, was refused by Justice Ademola Adeniyi.iNEC-CARD
The court however summoned both INEC and the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, who were cited as defendants in the suit, to appear before it on April 24.
The defendants are to address the court on the legality or otherwise of employing card readers for the 2015 general election.
Meanwhile, even though Justice Adeniyi declined to issue the interim order of injunction as he was prayed to do, he however stressed that if eventually the court ascertains that the use of the card readers were illegal and unconstitutional, he said the outcome of the elections would be annulled.

Presidency: Will opposition break the jinx today?

MAIN opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is going into today’s presidential and National Assembly elections with two goals in mind. The first is to win the presidential election and the second is to corner two-thirds of the 109 senatorial and 360 House of Representatives seats to enable the party run a seamless administration as from May 29, 2015.
In the history of elections in Nigeria, no ruling party has lost power at the centre. A number of incumbent governors have failed to get re-election mandate. Oyo State is a good example where no incumbent has been re-elected.
President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari
President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari
However, at the national level, the ruling or leading party has always had the upper hand. At his lecture on February 26 at Chatham House, London, APC Presidential Candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), enthused that he was on his way to victory and Nigeria could join the ranks of African countries where the opposition won presidential elections and successfully took over as a plus for the growing democratisation of the African continent.
Experience in some African countries
Senegal, Mauritius, Ghana, Mali, Cote D’ Ivoire Lesotho and Benin Republic are some of the countries where some incumbents and ruling parties lost presidential elections to the opposition.

Oshiomhole in war of words with Brigade Commander over Hilux vehicles donated to Army by Onolemenmen

BENIN CITY – GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state yesterday engaged in a war of words with the Brigade Commander of the 4th Brigade of the Nigerian Army Benin City, Brig.Gen.Olajide Laleye over the 14 Hilux vehicles donated to the men of the, allegedly by the Minister of Works, Arch.Mike Onolemenmen for the purpose of the elections.
Oshiomhole who addressed journalists shortly after holding security meeting with security chiefs in the state, told journalists of the alleged plot by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the election in the state, using some military men on mufti.
*Oshiomhole
*Oshiomhole
He said: “We have intelligence and it has been confirmed that the Minister of Works, deployed 14 vehicles in the premises of RCC construction Company Benin. This Hilux vehicles about 13 of them, were transferred from RCC premises to the headquarters of the 4th Brigade of the Nigerian army. I have expressed my concern to the Commander of the 4th Brigade that I did not think it was appropriate for the 4th Brigade to collect vehicles from the Ministry of Works for the purpose of this election.
“The Commander of the 4th Brigade told me that the vehicles were donated by the RCC because he approached RCC for support. I told him even that is wrong. The Brigade Commander cannot approach Israelis to provide them with security when the Edo State government is here. He has not made such a request to me and I reminded him that Israeli people cannot be assumed to have greater interest in the peace and security of Nigeria than the government of Edo state.

Expect poll results in 48 hrs, says Jega

Jega
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, yesterday said the results of the presidential and National Assembly elections would  be declared within 48 hours.
Jega, who said this in Abuja at a  press conference  also adressed by  the Director General of the National Youth Service Commission (NYSC), Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, noted that “the commission has put a lot in place to ensure the 48-hour target is met”.
Jega also denied the report making the rounds that the Commission’s database hadbeen compromised.
The INEC boss, in an apparent reaction to an allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council that the master key was in possession of the APC, said only the producers of the data- base infrastructure of the INEC have the source code.
He further said  the company, Act Technologies Limited, was approved by  the Federal Executive Committee and was never blacklisted.

5 reasons why Buhari will win or 5 reasons why Jonathan won’t lose

Jonathan and Buhari
Jonathan and Buhari
Predicting the outcome of an election has never been this difficult. The reason is not too complex though: this is the first time since 1999 that the opposition party has gathered enormous momentum going into an election. What’s more: there seems to be a blossoming coalition between Muhammadu Buhari and the south. All you need do is look at the crowds and supporters at his rallies in the south, compared to the years gone by. However, no one dare rules out an incumbent president in a developing country, so President Goodluck Jonathan should not be considered down and out. But he has had a lot of negative publicity in his first term  which puts him at a disadvantage, at least with many people. The election is a referendum on his government, not on Buhari’s regime of three decades ago. There are good reasons for Buhari to be hopeful that he would win. And there are good reasons for Jonathan to believe that he too would win. We try to highlight each candidate’s hopes.

Police summon el-Rufai as security agents clamp down on APC leaders, supporter

Nasir-el-Rufai1
•Arrests violate peace accord – Buhari
•Says accord must be worth its letters
Leaders and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in different parts of the country are under siege  from security agents over today’s  presidential and National Assembly elections, even before the first ballot is cast.
The police yesterday summoned  the party’s governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the party’s senatorial candidate for Kaduna North, Mr.Suleiman Hunkuyi,  and Chairman of the party campaign council in the state, Alhaji Lawal Yakawada, for questioning.
The party’s presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday protested the development and warned that the clampdown was in bad faith and constituted a violation of the two Abuja Peace Accords he signed with President Goodluck Jonathan.
Already in security custody  are an APC member of the House of Representatives from Ondo State, Hon. Eniolorunda Omosule, the APC agent at the Port Harcourt office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Emma Edeeyah, and four leaders of the party in Akoko Edo 1 of Edo State.
The Kaduna  State Police Command, in a letter to the APC, summoned El-Rufai, Hunkuyi and Yakawada to  the command for questioning.

Newsbreak.ng pundits name Buhari ‘slight favourite’

NIGERIA-US-DIPLOMACY
Political pundits have tipped General Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to defeat President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in today’s s poll.
The pundits, all seasoned journalists, made their prediction after two sessions of deliberations at a presidential election roundtable organised by Newsbreak.ng, a broad-spectrum online news medium, to examine issues around the presidential election. They, however, submitted that it will be a closely contested race.
This is hinged on their conviction that the six-week shift in date has allowed President Jonathan’s campaign to regain a bit of momentum it lost through the success of the counter-insurgency offensive in the North-East.
Among those in attendance at the sessions were Ikechukwu Amaechi, a former member of the judges’ panel of CNN/MultiChoice African Journalists of the Year Award and Editor-in-Chief of The Niche; Adekanmi Ademiluyi, Editorial Board Chairman of The Niche, Mojeed Jamiu, former Director-General, Ekiti State Broadcasting Service; and Wale Fatade, a columnist with thecable.ng.

INEC redeploys electoral officers

INEC
The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has redeployed its electoral officers in the local government areas across the country ahead of today’s presidential and National Assembly elections.
It was learnt yesterday that the electoral officers had since resumed at their new duty posts.
Sources said the redeployment of the electoral officers  was carried  out by the commission to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections.
It was also said that the exercise was to prevent a situation whereby  officers, who may have become familiar with politicians in their localities, compromised the elections.
The new electoral officer for the Ijebu Ode Local Government Area, Mr. Olaniyi Kayode, told The Nationyesterday that he did not envisage any problem today as they are fully prepared for the elections.
Kayode  said all the “sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials” have been distributed as appropriate to areas and officials who would conduct the elections.
Accreditation, according to him, would commence at 8. 00 a.m. and end at 1. 00 p.m. while voting would start at 1.30 p.m. and end “until the last person on the queue must have voted and results would be declared on the spot after counting”.

Election is not war, says President

Goodluck-Jonathan
•Urges candidates to accept poll results
President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed to politicians in the country that elections must not be mistaken for war despite differences and disagreement among political parties.
He made the call yesterday during a national broadcast on the 2015 general elections.
According to him, those planning to unleash violence during and after the elections would be dealt with according to law.
He said: “Democracy allows dissent. It encourages differences and even fervent disagreements. But elections must never be mistaken for war or an opportunity to set fellow citizens against each other and tear our beloved nation apart.
“Those who may harbour any intentions of testing our will by unleashing violence during the elections in order to advance their political ambitions should think again as all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure that any persons who breach the peace or cause public disorder during or after the elections are speedily apprehended and summarily dealt with according to our laws.

Senate: Those favoured to win

Senate

JUST like the presidential election, the National Assembly poll also promises to be a battle of the titans today. While many of the legislators are seeking to return, some of the candidates are sitting governors, who are also running today.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu will be seeking second term in the Senate in today’s election. She currently represents Lagos Central Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and would have Dr. Ade Dosunmu, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as her major opponent. Political analysts have described Dr Dosunmu as no match for Senator Tinubu.
She is one of the candidates tipped to win the election following her robust contributions on the floor of the Senate and her enduring impact on her constituents. An educationist, administrator, philanthropist and Officer of the Order of the Niger, she was the exemplary First Lady of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, during which period she founded the New Era Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to youth development, girl-child education, women empowerment and inspiring young persons to excellence.
Over the years, she has made tremendous impact on the lives of several people and institutions within and outside Nigeria.
As Senator, she hosts a quarterly Town Hall Meeting with her constituents to render accounts of her stewardship and obtain feed-backs on their developmental needs.
Senator Gbenga Ashafa of the APC will also be seeking a second term in the Senate in today’s election. He was first elected into the Senate in 2011 under the defunct ACN. He represents Lagos East in the current 7th National Assembly. He  is the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development. He is also a member of Senate committees on Environment and Ecology Committee, Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Relations, Gas Committee, and Senate Services Committee.
The contest appears to be an easy ride for him judging by the fact that his main opponent in the PDP, Mrs. Olabisi Owolabi Salis-Fakos, is relatively young and unknown in the political terrain. If analysis by political watchers is anything to go by, Ashafa  may have an easy ride to the next legislative session.
Abubakar Bukola Saraki: The former governor of Kwara State is one of the candidates that  may have an easy ride to victory in today’s election. He is seeking a second term in the Senate to  represent Kwara Central Senatorial District.
He was elected governor on May 2003 and served for  two terms in office. In the April 2011 elections, he was elected Senator for Kwara Central, succeeding his sister, Gbemisola Saraki-Forowa. He was a member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) but defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He prides himself as  one of the few senators in the 7th assembly who post their weekly activities, so Kwarans and Nigerians at large can see, follow and contribute to what he is doing both in the legislative and constituency.
He surely stands shoulder above any of his political opponents going by his political clout and antecedent.
David Mark: The Senate President is one of the senators that will be seeking reelection to the Senate. He has contested and won election to represent Benue South on four occasions. He will be seeking his fifth term in the Senate in today’s election. The former Minister of Communication will have the All Progressives Congress candidate Dan Onjeh to battle with to determine who represents the area in the 8th legislative session. Mark was elected to his position as the Senate President on June 6, 2007 and ran for re-election to the Senate for Benue South in April 2011 and was elected for a fourth term. Prior to his senatorial career, Mark was a military governor of Niger State. He retired as a Brigadier-General.
George Akume: The former governor of Benue State is looking forward to his third tenure in the Senate after today’s election. He is contesting on the platform of the APC and has Hon. Mike Nku of the PDP as one of his top contenders. His journey to the Senate began in 2007 when he won election to represent the people of Benue North West in the  legislative arm of government. And was reelected Senator in the April 2011 elections.
He is currently the Minority Leader of the Senate. With his wealth of political experience as the governor of the state from 1999 to 2007 and his quality participation in his two terms in the Senate, he is likely to coast to victory at the end of the day.
Senator Barnabas Gemade: The former national chairman of the PDP is a member of the current Senate. He will be contesting on the platform of the APC to represent Benue North East, for a third term in the upper legislative arm. He has the incumbent governor, Gabriel Suswan, to contend with. The battle will no doubt rank among the toughest for a seat in the next Senate.
But such challenge may not be new to the leading chief from the Tiv ethnic minority who holds the title of the Nom-I-Yange-I-Tiv . In the first National Convention of the PDP after the April 1999 General Elections, Gemade was elected National Chairman after a tough competition with one of the party’s founding fathers, the late Chief Sunday Awoniyi. He succeeded Solomon Lar, the first Chairman of the party, and was elected in part due to zoning rules which favoured giving the post to a northerner.
It appears Gemade  has what it takes to shrug off the challenge of Governor Suswam, who has left no one in doubt of his preparedness to snatch the seat from him at the end of the day.
Shaaba Lafiagi: Like Bukola Sarski, Lafiagi will also be taking a second shot at the Senate in today’s election. He currently represents Kwara-North Senatorial District and will be squaring it up with Hon. Yinusa Yahaya, the PDP candidate, and others to clinch the seat. Yahaya is a former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Works as well as a two-term lawmaker for Edu/Patigi/Moro federal constituency between 1999 and 2007.
The APC candidate is not a new comer in the business of politics. He was elected the governor of the state on the platform of the then Social Democratic Party in 1991. After some years of absence from public office, he was elected senator representing Kwara-North in 2011. He was returned unopposed as the senatorial candidate of the district to take part in today’s election.
Professor Olusola Adeyeye: He is a biologist who was elected Senator for the Osun Central constituency of Osun State in the April 2011  elections. Back then, he ran on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Today, he is seeking reelection to the Senate on the platform of the APC.
He is currently the Vice-Chairman of Senate Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa and NAPED  and also  Education (Science and Technology).
Before he was elected to represent his constituency in the Senate, Prof Adeyeye was a member, House of Representatives between 2003/2007.  The outspoken lawmaker definitely has an intimidating political record that qualifies him to emerge victorious in today’s election. Chief Oluwole Aina is the PDP candidate for the senatorial district. Both of them will be joined by other candidates to slug it out for the senatorial seat.
Mohammed Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso: He was governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003. He was re-elected for a second term as governor on 26 April 2011. He was among the five PDP governors that defected to the new opposition party APC after they were dissatisfied with developments in the ruling party. He contested the APC presidential primary alongside General Muhammadu Buhari. He is contesting for the Kano Central Senatorial District in the election. He would contend with the incumbent senator, Basheer Garba Mohammed Lado, in what pundits have termed the battle of the titans. With his experience in different political capacities, analysts opine that Kwankwaso has all it takes to defeat the incumbent senator.
Aliyu Wamakko: He ran successfully for governor of Sokoto State in April 2007 on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, and assumed office on 29 May 2007 and still in charge of the state till date. He is one of the candidates jostling for Sokoto West senatorial seat in today’s election. He has been tipped to win the contest by political commentators who have cited his political sagacity as rare strength that would give him victory in any electoral contest.

He is gunning for a second term in office in today’s election on the platform of the APC.
