A tick bite led to amputations on all four of an Oklahoma woman's limbs. Doctors did it to save Jo Rogers' life from the aggressive bacteria the arachnid passed on.

It's the worst case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever they'd seen, Roger's cousin Lisa Morgan told CNN affiliate KOCO.

Rogers fought for her life on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. Her family is now focusing her attention on getting through this.

"You're going to get to watch your boys grow up," her cousin Lisa Morgan tells her. Rogers, 40, has two sons, ages 12 and 17.

The intensity of Rogers' case may be rare, but infections unfortunately are not.

Few people die from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever anymore, since it can be treated with antibiotics. But treatment should start in the first five days of infection. Rogers appears to have missed that time frame.

New Yorker pretends to be doctor for 3 years, officials say

Donald Lee-Edwards was arrested this week and accused of impersonating a clinical psychologist and medical doctor for three years and potentially providing mental health services to over 100 patients, said the Richmond County District Attorney's office.

He is "a dangerous scam artist who never completed any medical school or doctoral program. He merely bestowed upon himself the professional titles of clinical psychologist and medical doctor," said Daniel Master Jr., Richmond County district attorney.

According to authorities, Lee-Edwards said he worked "extensively with family members and victims of 9/11" and made himself available for home visits. In June, the district attorney's office was notified of his practice after skeptical patients complained of his unorthodox bedside manner and his prescription methods.

CNN affiliate WCBS spoke to one of Lee-Edwards' patients, Kim Broadie, outside his office. Broadie showed them a bottle of anti-depressants he had been prescribed with a different doctor's name; the district attorney's office said Lee-Edwards would call in his prescriptions under the identity of a different doctor with a similar sounding name.

At least 40 migrants found dead at sea in smuggling boat near Libya, another 320 rescued by Italian navy

 

ROME — At least 40 migrants died Saturday in the hold of an overcrowded smuggling boat in the Mediterranean Sea north of Libya, apparently killed by fuel fumes, and some 320 others aboard were saved by the Italian navy, the rescue ship’s commander said.
Migrants by the tens of thousands are braving the perilous journey across the Mediterranean this year, hoping to reach Europe and be granted asylum. They are fleeing war, persecution and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

China explosions death toll tops 100

 

New, small explosions rocked a disaster zone in the Chinese port of Tianjin on Saturday as teams scrambled to clear dangerous chemical contamination and found several more bodies to bring the death toll to 104 in massive blasts earlier in the week.
Angry relatives of missing firefighters stormed a government news conference to demand any information on their loved ones, who have not been seen since a fire and rapid succession of blasts late Wednesday at a warehouse for hazardous chemicals in a mostly industrial area.
The death toll in the ensuing inferno included at least 21 firefighters — making the disaster the deadliest for Chinese firefighters in more than six decades.

Deputy Governor of Borno state, Zannah Mustapha dies in Yola

The deputy governor of Borno State, Zannah Mustapha died in Yola, Adamawa state this morning during an official trip to the state. Mustapha, who had gone to Yola yesterday to attend the convocation ceremony at Moddibo Adama University, retired to his room last night and failed to wake up this morning. He'd died in his sleep at a government guest house in the state capital.

He was found unresponsive around 8am after his aides entered his room when they noticed he hadn't woken up for early morning prayers. He is believed to have died of cardiac arrest. Borno state governor has since confirmed his death to reporters. May his soul rest in peace, amen

Tragedy struck on Wednesday afternoon August 12th when 7 students of St Martin Boys’ Boarding Primary School in Kahuro, Murang’a County, Kenya drowned in the Indian Ocean while on school holiday. The students, aged between 13 and 15, met their deaths while swimming at the Pavilion Beach, Diani, in Kwale.

The students were on a tour of the Coast as they waited to sit their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams in November.

Buhari asks Power Ministry to do more for Nigerians

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has challenged the Federal Ministry of Power to work harder to achieve steady and uninterrupted electricity for Nigerians.

The Permanent Secretary, Godknows Igali, in a presentation, told the President that the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) had, in the last two months, raised generation from 3,000 MW to 4,600MW.

Buhari, however,  urged the ministry to improve on  this by working harder to achieve more.

Igali spoke to reporters in Abuja yesterday during a presentation of the National Renewable Energy Action Plan, National Energy Efficiency Action Plan and Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Action Agenda.

Mark to testify at tribunal on Aug. 18

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Makurdi yesterday fixed August 18 for former Senate President David Mark to testify.

Mark was taken to the tribunal by Daniel Onjeh of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his declaration by INEC as the winner of the Benue South seat.

A Nigerian actor has on Thursday emerged as the next James Bond, following long-standing rumours that Idris Elba from Britain is in line to replace the current Bond, Daniel Craig.

David Oyelowo, who is also a producer, director, and writer played supporting roles in many movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Middle of Nowhere, Lincoln and many more.

Drug barons fleeing Nigeria, says NDLEA

The Director-General of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. Roli Bode-George, has said many drug barons have relocated to neighbouring countries.

Mrs. Bode George, who is also the secretary of the agency, in a statement yesterday, listed some achievements of the agency as the discovery of six clandestine laboratories in Lagos and Anambra states, destruction of 4,529.15 hectares of Cannabis farms in Osun, Ondo and Edo states.

She said an operation, code named “Weed Eaters”, led to the removal of Nigeria by the United States from the drug majors’ list, thereby easing security checks and screening on Nigerians travelling outside the country, among others.

Castro blasts U.S ahead of embassy reopening

Former Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, has published an open letter to the nation in which he makes no mention of the historic reopening of the United States embassy.

Mr. Castro instead criticises American foreign and economic policies since World War Two and accuses the U.S of owing Cuba millions of dollars, the BBC reports.

The letter was published to mark Mr. Castro’s 89th birthday.

Greek parliament backs €85bn bailout deal

Greece’s parliament has backed draft terms for a third bailout in five years after talks that lasted through the night and well into the morning.

The proposed deal involves tax rises and spending cuts in return for a bailout of about €85bn (£61bn, $95bn).

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras also survived a significant rebellion within his own Syriza party, the BBC reports.

Reports in Greece say he will ask for a confidence vote before parliament in the next week.

Edo: Man sees own ‘obituary’ announcement

An hotelier, Mr. Clifford Osawaru, got the shock of his life when he got calls from family and friends asking if he was actually dead.

The calls came after posters announcing his death were pasted on some streets in Okunmwun community, Ovia North East local government area of Edo State.

Osawaru, 66, who was visibly shocked, said he was surprise that people could announce his death and burial arrangement while he was still hale and hearty.

Bureau finds crashed helicopter’s Black Box

The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), on Friday announced that it had recovered the Black Box of the Bristow helicopter that crashed into the Lagos lagoon on Wednesday.

The Black Box contains the Cockpit Voice and the Flight Data Recorders.

Commissioner of the Accident Investigation Bureau, Dr Felix Abali, made this known while displaying the two devices to aviation correspondents at the bureau’s headquarters in Lagos.
