Lagos - Local broadcasting stations have been urged to ensure the participation of children in the airwaves on International Day of Broadcasting (ICDB).
This year’s edition of the annual event is scheduled for March 1.
The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund launched ICDB in 1991 to encourage broadcasters worldwide to create awareness on children’s issues.
It is a day broadcasters allow children to be part of the programming process, to talk about their hopes and dreams and share information with their peers.
The theme for this year’s celebration is, “Children are Children even in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. Let’s Protect their Rights, Please.”
This coincides with the ongoing terror locally, which has left thousands of children seeking refuge in camps housing IDPs owing to the ongoing Boko Haram terror.
“We therefore enjoin broadcasters to open airwaves to the children for this year’s celebration and throughout the year and also produce documentaries that details the plight of children,” Goffrey Njoku, UNICEF Nigeria Media and External Relations Officer said from Abuja.
