Trader docked over alleged theft of N1.5m

A 39-year-old trader, Titilayo Ilesanmi, on Wednesday in Lagos appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining and stealing the sum of N1.5 million.
The accused, who resides at No. 81, Akerele Street, Surulere in Lagos State, is facing a three-count charge of stealing, obtaining under false pretences and issuing of a dud cheque.
The prosecutor, Corporal Jimah Iseghede, told the court that the accused committed the offences on November 17, at No.77, Ojuelegba Road, Surulere.
Iseghede said that the accused went to the complainant’s office, ACCION Microfinance Bank Ltd, Ojuelegba branch, Lagos, to apply for a loan of N1.5 million.
“The bank gave the loan to the accused which she was supposed to refund on December 18, 2014 but she failed.
“The accused issued a dud Diamond Bank cheque No. 55399195 for N120, 000.
“The complainant called her cell phone but was not reachable, and the complainant reported the case to the police.
“During investigation, the police discovered that the accused used fake home address and guarantors’ addresses during her documentation for the processing of the loan.
“The accused ran away but she was later arrested by the police,” Iseghede said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 313 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 285 prescribes a three-year imprisonment for stealing.
Also, Section 312(3) says that any person who obtains money under false pretences is liable to15 years’ imprisonment.
The chief magistrate, Mrs A.F. Adeeyo, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adeeyo said that the sureties must produce evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She also said that the sureties must produce genuine means of livelihood, be residents of Lagos state, and should have their addresses verified by the court’s prosecutor.
Adeeyo adjourned the matter till February 18 for mention.
